  • The advantage of making your own liqueurs is that you can make them to the strength you wish, I tend to add more water than required to the recipes, dosen't alter the flavour too much and means that you can enjoy it without worrying too much about the aftereffects. However, the are some home brewers that do the opposite - with devastating consequences!

Hopefully a frugalista recipe this time.

    Crispy corn pancakes
    Half a bag of polenta
    some self raising flour
    can of sweet corn
1/2 tsp or so of salt
    1/2 pint of milk
    1 egg
    1 or 2 spring onions

Mix it all up so it's a very thick pancake batter, griddle on a hot non stick frying pan. takes about 30 seconds on each side.

Top with a bit of cheese before serving. Makes lots and lots of pancakes.

No idea how well they keep as just made up the recipe tonight so there;s some in the freezer surviving the freezer test.

I must be doingsomething wrong as it takes literally hours for it to cook down, today it took nearly 4 hours!

Is it the recipe I posted? umm lets think...are you keeping to the recipe or adding bits in typical "oo lets have a bit of that" style that we all do? When I do it faithful to the recipe (not that often lol !!) it takes about 2 1/2 hrs simmering to take most of the juice and I always leave a bit in as prefer it "loose" (eew sounds like a poo!!)...also if you use tinned toms they may be extra wet as there is quite a bit of juice and I have always used fresh as it adds texture...cant think of any other reasons. Maybe next time make it exactly to the recipe (if you didnt this time) and see if it makes a difference? HTH?

sorry you had a stressy w/e..mine was mixed but I have a day off today to recoup a bit before w***...going to go back to bed and have a read before starting the day...nice and warm in there...suddenly got very cold here and my feet need socks!

ok so maybe I added a few extra bits lol......dont we all. I always use fresh fruit and veg, no tinned. Think I may actually have had it just turned down a bit too low as it can scorch really easy. Like you I leave it a bit more loose as well as DH loves it on his sandwiches and I like on toasted cheese sandwiches lol. Going to make another batch today as managed to get punnets of plums for £1. Think that will be the end of it then as I can see plums getting too expensive as well as toms before long! Either way at the end of the day it is well worth the wait, there is no doubt about that and I always end up with 6 larger jars and one little jar so between yesterday and today should end up with 14 jars and still have some from the first batch as well, but I think only 3 jars left of that!! DH would eat the lot if given the chance!!

    http://www.recipething.com/recipes/show/2986

my friend who had the baby and ent round for cuddles, tea and hug administration for a tired mummy...the cake is very simple and I've run out of milk (lost a shopping bag somewhere with milk and red bull in - disasterous!!) so had to use soya and t was still yummy - actually crunchier than when I've made it before and this is definately a goes into the fave box recipes!! I do tend to use zest for the topping and in the recipe so 2 lemons overall and I then heat the lemons in the micro with water to clean the microwave!! works a treat..thanks Kim n aggie!
Supper was leftover rice with more mushrooms, prawns and a bit of curry powder for extra flav...yummy!

Good luck with the job hunting PP...thinking of you...libraries are great arent they? Will make mine a yummy Christmas something to eat to say thank you for their wonderful service...plus many parents use it as a creche and theyre great as making kids feel valued...a real community service!

ISOM - that cake looks wonderful and I think I shall be making it for pudding tonight! Now if I could just figure out what to make for tea! Just a quick question, what type pan do you bake this in.....loaf pan or round? I bet loaf would be nice but not sure.

Made another batch of chutney yesterday and it did not take as long to cook, think I must have had the heat too low the other day. The one I made the other day is also a darker brown and seems to have set a bit thicker, oh well. They always taste nice either way. My one countertop is starting to look like a small market stall with all the jams and chutneys on it! I hardly have room there for anything at the moment and can just about see my BM sat there!

Well off to search the freezer and figure out what is for tea and then must get back to work or I will never get things done before the boss rings later this morning.

Have a great morning everyone, hugs to all those that need or want them.

  • Hello all

Planning a frugal Xmas at the moment, with Christmas hampers for several friends and relatives (have you all seen Weezl's hamper thread? Our gal get around you know! ;) ) and plucking up the courage to make chutney - probably apple cheese, as neighbour has a very productive apple tree and has offered me free rein to take as I wish.:T

I was away in the lakes this weekend, and bought some quite un-frugal gifts, like locally made lemon curd and sticky toffee sauce for £2.70 for a teeny jar! I reasoned splashing out on one or two ingredients for the hampers wouldn't be the end of the world, and some of them are diabetic-friendly for a couple of people I always struggle to buy for.

Did go into a sweet shop and scrounge two of their lovely big sweet jars for storing pasta and the like in. Weeeerll, have a new BF and am embarassed (sorry! :o But I am!) about him seeing the value packets of pasta etc, so thought I would decant into storage containers and be very "Nigella" pretty about the whole thing. :p Pity I baulked when I saw the prices of storage jars in Mr T, even Home Bargains seemed expensive. :rotfl: Sweetie jars are practical AND pretty! And free! Ok I'll stop going on about them now..

While I was away I happened to stumble upon a beauty of a find - a cash & carry that was open to the general public too. A lot of the stuff was no cheaper than normal but I did find... MASSIVE catering sized tubs of herbs and spices for the same price as teeny weeny ones! You know the schwartz herbs that come in neat little glas jars etc - well they were selling massive (sorry, no idea of actual quantity, but approximately 10 times the content) ones of those for the same price as you woudl pay for a small one in the supermarket! Bring into that the fact that dried herbs last a very long time, and I was terribly excited! I got:

    Basil - £1.70
    Paprika - £2.70
    Mixed herbs £1.75

To put that into perspective, even asda value mixed herbs is 50p for a pot that contains about 1/10th of this.

    Happy days!

hello there all lovely contributors and lurkers

naturally, I'll be very interested in what else you pop in your hampers!

made another recipe using the ubiquitous asda smart price Turkey leg:

Turkey and apricot casserole, makes 10 generous portions, v nice with rice...

    1 turkey leg
2 tins eazy onions (thanks for that tip shaz, they're lovely!!!)
1 bag farm foods diced swede (4x 10% off vouchers for farmfoods came through the door, so we stocked up on some goodies!)
    2 x 250g bags of dried apricots
salt, pepper, and a bit of garlic if you fancy

Put all of the above into the slo cooker, and do on high for 5ish hrs 0r low for 8-9ish.

    nomnomnom.:D

You may want to add a little extra liquid...

it's a little less frugal than usual, coming in at 46p per portion, so with potatoes or rice, could be a meal for 50-60p per head.
    :money:

In truth, a lot of the meals I've costed up on here before are now hard to do as frugally, since rice has doubled in price since I began this challenge, as has wholemeal bread flour.

But we shall persevere!!!! It makes you wonder how recession and food price inflation will affect the rest of society (who haven't found the wondrous ways of Martin!) when even the frugalistas are dismayed in the supermarkets!:rotfl:

    Love to you all,

  • I know what you mean Weezl. I was expecting my potatoes to have gone up in price, but was pleasantly surprised to be able to get a 56kg sack for £3.50, so we can have spuds with everything..you know the one...anything you want so long as it is a spud meal:rotfl: :rotfl:
