Hello there all free thinking foraging frugalistas!
I haven't written for a bit despite popping in to read and click thanks everyday. Returning to a 5 day week is proving a shock to the system! Today I have an ante-natal appointment though, so I don't have to go in! I know this sounds extreme as a chunk of time off:eek:, but my work day starts at 10.15 in bristol, and ends at 4.15, and my appointment is at 1, so there's no way I could go to work, cos it takes me an hour and a half each way (hence the shorter day!):D:D:D
Still, I'm up for taking all the time I'm allowed! My pal says we're entitled to take time off to go to aqua-natal classes, but that feels like it's taking the mick (I'm a bit over-concientious when it comes to work!)
Anyhow, back on topic, I've got another frugal recipe for you.
Turkey korma (you need a big slo cooker for this one!)
1 large turkey leg, asda smartprice or Tesco value- £1.37
200g red lentils- 22p
4 heaped tablespoons coconut powder 20p
cumin, fennel seeds, garlic powder, salt 10p
500g frozen fine green beans. (I snip these in half with scissors before serving, and then the curry and rice fits nicely on forkfuls!) 40p
bung all of the above with at least 1.5 pints of boiling water into the slo cooker and leave it all day or night. Lovely, and 23p per portion, serves 10 portions.
We had it last night and the rest is in the freezer in tubs.
Shaz, I'm intrigued that you harvested your beetroot, mine are still a bit titchy looking, I wonder if they're too close together?! Hope uni's going well.
Off to make some porridge, back in a bit, Love Weezl x
Hmmmm...sounds like one I could adapt to use with quorn "chicken" - ta.0 -
yes! :TI think you could substitute dessicated coconut. If yours is a sweetened version, that might still work out well, cos ours was less sweet than a restaurant korma
Acetate monkey, thank you for the nice compliment

Good Morning Everyone
Well went into the office on Monday and came home with a huge tub of cooking apples. There must be at least 25-30 pounds of lovely apples. Boss has a small orchard at his house so finally got some. Must be several tons left on the trees! I just have one dilemma.....What can I do with that many apples????
Errrmmmm...well I'm looking for the Transylvanian recipe for making apple juice - having been told that its still lovely a year later - having only had root ginger as a preservative (ie nowt unnatural) - so if you find the way to do that before I do - I'd be interested to know purlease.

Hiya Munchki,
apple cheese lovely and sweet and cinnamonny, a kind of apply low fat version of lemon curd, and several chutneys made with apple all appeared successfully in our christmas hampers for family and friends last year. Could that be an idea? I made them in October...
Weezl x
Ah hah! Err. recipe please....and how long do you think it will last?
<wanders off thinking "I guess its got sugar in it ....I will get round to that making a sugar substitute from stevia plants yet.....errr...so many ideas....so little time.">0 -
:rotfl:I've been thinking about my neglect of the blog....
it did make me laugh to think the pictures were so gross even you were scared to look at them! hope anyone who read yr blog has realised you are alive and well and on this thread - they might think the piggy finished you off.
Mrs M - made your marmite and cheese twists today. My girls helped me - we made a bit of a mess but they taste great! I hate making packed lunches so I like the idea of having the bread and filling all in one.
I was so inspired that while the oven was hot I whipped up a batch of muffins. Usually when I bake I try to reduce the sugar or sneak in healthy ingredients, but today I just wanted some yummy cakes and they came out my best ones ever. I think I've been sneaking so many lentils and oats into my meals recently I can allow us a treat for afters!weaving through the chaos...0 -
Had to go into asda yet again today.....I swear I am going back to online shopping it costs me less and I always get everything the first time around!!!!....errrrrm anyway, bought a couple turkey legs, cant beat £1.27 for 700g so thought might try that korma unless I can come up with some other ideas while cooking in the slow cooker. Also, all this talk about corned beef, I had to pick up a tin so that will be on the menu at some point very SOON! All I went into asda for was some things to make jam and chutney with, so very bad I was indeed!
*goes to sit in the corner*

Evening weilies, weezles ferguses and acetate monkeys (not necc in that order!). Just popping in before bed...have discovered a delicious ready meal from kwic save for £1 - cheaper than a sandwich and with yummy sauce and rice which kept me going for ages - unlike sandwich which makes me hungr quick - even granary.
Can confirm the rasp vodka I made is yummy!! Having a wee tasty before bed...!! Poor ole martin with all the bashing...he just cant win can he eh! umm apple curdy sounds interesting...am going to do some jam and chutney for the w/e as strawbs cheaper at the mo - down to 1 a punnet in market so will get some soon! Do want to have some for me over winter and getting better at planning for this instead of flogging it all!
lol re the remoska mrs m...dont get it myself! like slow cookers dont like the thought of food being out for ages and also worry the house will burn down while I'm out..both possibly irrational fears...esp if youve seen my overloaded socket by lap top and telly lol!!!
How are pepys doing with making things? Can vouch for mrs weezl feeling ikky with piggy - at one point I made her lie down with a cuppa as she went a delicate shade of china white!! Mind you I'd have done that without a fergus on board...yeugh!! piggy heads aint nice looking plus they drip everywhere....eeew!Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! In search of me
r.e.m.e the remoska is nothing like a slow cooker
you don't switch it on and leave it for yonks -whatever you are cooking is just like using an oven -sometimes quicker -but only 450watts -someone was saying there electric fan oven uses 2000watts  -So it saves a lot of energy...
It just has an on/off switch -but cooks everythingbread is super yummy in it
I have roast chicken, potatoes, made pasta bakes, bread, scones, tea cakes in it and everything actually comes out better :T
I have an army gas cooker that has gas jets on the floor of the oven -so you can't even stick casseroles on it  -you can't get crispy tops on stuff and it burns the bottoms of things too ..its a gas guzzling heap -so this is super duper :T ..mum has had hers 8 weeks, cooks every day and has only had her oven on twice -1 of those being a birthday cake that wouldn't fit the remoska anyway
Heck I sound like a remoska rep :rotfl: I will shuffle off now *to lovingly stroke my remoska*
Oooh and tomorrow im doing chicken n leek cobbler in it using up roast chicken I have-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -
I'm not doing much making of anything, other than cooking from scratch -- and not much of that tonight (shop bought savoury pie) or tomorrow (shop bought pizza for me and DS - just need toppings putting on -- and a sausage and mash ready real for DH that's been "lurking" in the freezer for a few months, same as tonights pie).
I've got some 39p veggies from Aldi to prep and shove into the freezer tomorrow -- but to make space for them I need to [STRIKE]eat some ice-cream[/STRIKE] transfer the ice-cream that's in there into smaller tubs.Cheryl0
