Hi all, mumsrus I bought a 6.5 ltr slow cooker about a month ago and its the best thing I have ever bought, there are 6 of us and i have been making huge batches of dinners and soups so the freezer is now full and the kids are actually eating more of the food so saving a fortune there. went to lidl today and spent £10 on fruit and veg (half price there just now) so really chuffed as thats enough for 3 big batches of soup, all the veg I need for the week and loads to freeze... yippee for lidl

    Morning all

Hope everyone is well this morning :D

Well firstly..my 2nd remoska (the FREE one) arrived yesterday:j complete with 1/2 pan, foil and utensils :T -hubby rang me from work to let me know that, and that he had taken it out of its box to show the men  apparently none of them can figure why it has no temperature control.. just on/off and yet it cooks everything from cakes to roasts to bread perfectly :rotfl: they all sat around staring at it and trying to suss it out -before giving up:rotfl:

I have been busily using up all sorts -Im half way through my month and have only spent €5.84 so far on some milk, leeks and 5 more huge "emergency" tins of soups for the winter store:T ...
I made a lovely thing the other day -
    1. a couple of turkey steaks, diced and thrown in the remoska,
    2. added a chopped leek (needed using)and left until soft,
    3. then added 3/4 tin of sweetcorn (wanted using)
    4. stirred in a thick cheese sauce (milk that needed using)
    5. then I had some mashed potato, cooked cabbage and grean beans -so I bashed them together and placed on top (just like bubble n squeak)
    6. added a grating of cheese and left to crisp up on top
It would serve 4 easily with a few veg or roasties and it was gorgeous -so the rest of the turkey steaks in the freezer will be used the same way ;)

I haven't switched my oven on yet -a whole week without having that on is amazing.... it would normally go on everyday at least once  .. Im using my usual bread recipe but cooking it in the remoska it tastes much better  -I make 2 cakes of bread -but its still toastable :T

We had corned beef hash n dumplings yesterday nomnomnom.... now normally they say half the amount of suet to the flour -well yesterday I couldn't be diddled to go into the basement to get a new box of suet out :rotfl: -so I had my 200g SR flour and only 60g suet -and they came out just the same :j ..so not only less cals/fat but cheaper too :D
We have half a big pan of cornedbeef hash left so it will have a crust on it tonight to make a pie -will do it in the remoska :p

My wool hasn't arrived yet  -I spoke to the woman yesterday -it seems they courriered it to Catterick Garisson -in the UK  .. I explained that wasn't the address I gave them, she read back the address I gave her -then added that she thought I meant the one she sent it too  ---- NO I meant the address I gave her  .. The address even has Germany in it -so she is going to post it today -hopefully to the right address this time :o ! I seem to be having more trouble with deliveries at the moment

right I had better get my brekkie and then get on with some crochet , ooh and I need to make some more bread;)
have a great day everyone :D

  • Success, still living off the batch of mince I made up last weekend. Made a chili with it last night, throwing in some old salsa we had left in the fridge.. and it was delicious, and left me with enough that I could eke out a third portion of it for my lunch today! :T

Hitting the oven tonight again, we're going away camping this weekend... but it's at a period re-enactment type thing, so need things that will keep well as I can't take tupperware (as it's not incharacter) and food cooking/reheating will be done over an open fire. I was going to make some rolls, take some chese and probably some apples too, but does anyone else have any sparkier ideas?

    Cheers,

Hello there all free thinking foraging frugalistas!

I haven't written for a bit despite popping in to read and click thanks everyday. Returning to a 5 day week is proving a shock to the system! Today I have an ante-natal appointment though, so I don't have to go in! I know this sounds extreme as a chunk of time off:eek:, but my work day starts at 10.15 in bristol, and ends at 4.15, and my appointment is at 1, so there's no way I could go to work, cos it takes me an hour and a half each way (hence the shorter day!):D:D:D

Still, I'm up for taking all the time I'm allowed! My pal says we're entitled to take time off to go to aqua-natal classes, but that feels like it's taking the mick (I'm a bit over-concientious when it comes to work!)

Anyhow, back on topic :o, I've got another frugal recipe for you.

Turkey korma (you need a big slo cooker for this one!)

1 large turkey leg, asda smartprice or Tesco value- £1.37
    200g red lentils- 22p
4 heaped tablespoons coconut powder 20p
cumin, fennel seeds, garlic powder, salt 10p
500g frozen fine green beans. (I snip these in half with scissors before serving, and then the curry and rice fits nicely on forkfuls!) 40p

bung all of the above with at least 1.5 pints of boiling water into the slo cooker and leave it all day or night. Lovely, and 23p per portion, serves 10 portions.

We had it last night and the rest is in the freezer in tubs.

Shaz, I'm intrigued that you harvested your beetroot, mine are still a bit titchy looking, I wonder if they're too close together?! Hope uni's going well.

Off to make some porridge, back in a bit, Love Weezl x

As a typical fuss-a**e, I'd like to add that the meat falls off the bones in the s/c, and as turkey has funny prong-like bits of bone as well as the main one this is definitely the way to cook turkey leg. Much, much less faffy, and more acceptable to people like me who don't like working for a mouthful.:o

As weezl said, it was yummy :T

yes! :TI think you could substitute dessicated coconut. If yours is a sweetened version, that might still work out well, cos ours was less sweet than a restaurant korma ;)

Acetate monkey, thank you for the nice compliment

must admit the beetroot is still in the ground but my first attempts didnt do so well either they definitely need a bit of space using the celeriac too but wish i had done more as they are nowhere near as big as the ones in shop and much hairier too .

leeks were well worth the money and faff too

spinach is looking a bit floppy bust get it in and do something with it

Got given a greenhouse heater and a gallon of paraffin but don't know what to grow ....any ideas gratefully recieved

weezl - Uni going great but very time consuming still managing to bake and cook though...........organisation a must!!

    Good Morning Everyone

Well went into the office on Monday and came home with a huge tub of cooking apples. There must be at least 25-30 pounds of lovely apples. Boss has a small orchard at his house so finally got some. Must be several tons left on the trees! I just have one dilemma.....What can I do with that many apples????

I plan on peeling and slicing some of them to put in bags and freeze for pies but not sure what to do with the rest. Maybe stew some? but then what to do with the stewed apples. If I had a proper canner I would make applesauce. Plan on getting stuck into doing something with them all this weekend dont think it is going to be very "apeeling" with all these apples. ok ok bad pun!!

Glad to see everyone is ok hugs all around....back to do a bit more work now.
