Last week, whilst settling down to watch X Factor and Strictly (!) I get a serious case of the munchies, and luckily I had brought some popping corn whilst at Asda last. I could only find one bag in Asda, 1kg of Asda Wholefoods popping corn for £1.98. It was really easy to make - 100g of the popping corn in a saucepan with a bit of oil produced a big bowlful of popcorn for about 20p - enough for two to share!! I added a bit of salt and some melted butter too but you could easily add some sugar or just leave it plain. It was the first time I had ever made any (usually get the microwave popcorn) and couldn't believe how easy and cheap it was to make! Will definately be making some more as a snack.
Just had a look on https://www.mysupermarket.co.uk and here are the prices of the popping corn in various supermarkets near me:
Tesco - Tesco Wholefoods popping corn maize 500g 98p
Asda - Dunns River natural popping corn 500g 67p, Asda Wholefoods popping kernals 1kg £1.98
Sainsburys - Cypressa popping corn 500g 63p
So, Sainsburys is the cheapest! Just think, I just to pay £1.95 for 3 bags of microwave popcorn! And have you seen the prices of popcorn in the cinems lately? Criminal!
Has anyone seen any popping corn cheaper than this (is it something that asian supermarkets would stock?)

the prices you list come to £1.63. the lentils I've been using (Asda organic green) work out at 8p for 50g, taking the cost up to £1.71. tomato puree varies drastically depending on brand and whether it's from a tube or tin...... Napoline from Mr A in tube is about another 19p at a guess, so a total before herbs of £1.90. If it makes 4 servings, that would come in at 47.5p a portion.
TBH, the herbs etc don't add much (though the garlic depends where it came from, as I've seen it from really cheap offers to places where 1 bulb costs as much as 3 or 4 of the cheaper ones!) -- so possibly another 1p each? I'm sure Weezl will be more up on this part of the costing than me though
The tomato puree I used was Tesco own brand in a tube, so don't think it was quite 20p's worth as it wasn't as expensive as the Napolina one. I agree with you about the cost of the garlic - Im sure I picked up 3 bulbs for something ridiculous like 40p in Asda and put them in the fridge! Thanks so much for the help with the costings - I wonder if there is a way to cost out the spices? Some recipies only use about 1/2 or 1/4 teaspoon so it would be fairly impossible to find out how much it weighs in order to calculate the cost!!
If anyone could work out a way of costing out the spices I would be grateful as I use a lot of them in my cooking to flavour things!!MFW 2011 challenge - Aim: Overpay £414.26 a month/£5,000 a year. Oh yum!!!! Going to try that one tonight!! Cinnamon is supposed to be good for diabetics as well isn't it? (I don't have diabeties btw I just read about it somewhere!) Popcorn with a sprinkling of cinnamon must be a healthy snack for diabetics to indulge in then!!MFW 2011 challenge - Aim: Overpay £414.26 a month/£5,000 a year. A'noon all !
Having a fairly relaxing weekend here after all our hard work this week.
Hubby is busy making spicy carrot chutney (ready for Xmas !)
Tea-wise we're having home-made spicy wedges (potatoes free from Mum and Dad, spices from storecupboard), chicken drumsticks (£1.50, part of buy 2 for £3) and sweetcorn - 4 @ 25p each from farm shop). Total cost for 5 is £2.50 so 50p each. Nowhere near Weezl but we're getting there slowly ! lol Apple pie for dessert (had half the other night) - total cost for that was about 50p, used apples from farm shop and made my own pastry. I've just popped a loaf of bread in and will have some fresh bread, cheese n chutneys for supper tonight (don't usually have supper but always get the munchies on a sat nightso wanted to make sure we had something to nibble on !)
Bargainhunter - thanks for sharing the spicy sausage casserole - that's gone in my recipe folder !
Weezl - be prepared, you may have to buy bigger again yet ! I think I had 3 bra shopping expeditions during my first pregnancy (I looked like Jordan by the time I was due ! ) - resemble something like peanuts now :rotfl: (joking !!!!!)
cw18 - huggzzz xx been thinking about you today, hope things get better soon xx
plum pie - I shall keep an eye out for the other book too, wonder if they're much different ?
Mrs M - how lucky are you !!!??? Someone up there is smiling on youNext gadget on my list is a blender, chopper, slicer thingy - to save my sore fingers from all the chopping when making the chutneys.
Plan for tomorrow (because the weather is so awful here) is to make a madeira (sp?) cake for DD. She had an 'evacuation day' at school and part of it was tasting war-time food and she loved it so I promised I would make her one. Not sure what else but i'm in a cooking mood lately so might get some mince out of the freezer and do some lasagne's/bolognaise ready for next week. Must remember the lentils !
Have a great evening xx:jWeight loss to date 1st 11.5lb :j0 -
evening lovely weezilites...just back from a lovely afternoon with weezl shopping! Forgive me sisters...I have lead her astray!! But now she will be comfy and wont get a bad back! Will let her reveal what was spent but suggest that you sit down
More importantly we had a giggle whch is good for both of us...although I can be a bit loud and expressive at times and forget that our weezl is a lady (said with the necessary little britain accent!) and possibly doesent want the shop to know all!!
I have thought of a most excellent adventure but will let weezl mull over it before revealing my cunning plan!
So for me not a frugal day/week but thakfully babysitting paid for new cutting mat, omerod measure (which cost 12!!) for my patchwork, trousers for allotment (12) and two new pairs comfy winter shoes for 45 but managed to get extra money off so weezl saved me almost a pair of shoes...now going to change sheets (got duvet cleaned today-smells yummy and fresh!) and then relax with dvd, nailvarnish and red wine. Our weezl is having a wee sleep as all this shopping exhausting, esp when knitting babies!
After a manic week sheer heaven! Hope oh ok cw...good to stay at home for him as can imagine feeling that poorly can be very scary and hard to admit that me thinks?Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! Even in the darkest moments, love and hope are always possible.0 -

I've just managed to buy an old Kenwood Chef on ebay, I'm soooooo excited, how sad! I've been lusting after one for a while, (the Lakeland catalogue is like !!!!!! for me!) but can't justify the cost, started looking at second hand ones and even if it dies in a while at least I'll know whether its worth me buying a brand new one! Right it'll be cakes and pastries all they way to xmas now! Not very 50p had to share!!:rotfl:
......Off to find some recipes and wait by the door for the postman:o0
