Frugalista, there's a whole thread on butternut squash soup here: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=662639&highlight=butternut+squash+soup

I added dried sage when I was sweating the onions and separately boiled lentils in chicken stock with a bay leaf, which I drained and added when the soup was nearly done. I think it's important to boil the lentils in stock, otherwise the soup could be bland. You could also use normal green lentils or butter beans, both of which are about half the price of puy.

It's best after a day in the fridge and other flavourings could be cumin, chilli, orange, rosemary or ginger (but not all at once!)

    Munchki,
A search for 'glut of apples' produced the following:

    hello!

had a busy few days, ill children and time just flies!

any ideas? i'm making a fish pie with white fish, smoked fish, prawns, mushroom, onion and peas/sweetcorn in white sauce(made with milk fish cooked in!) and topped with mash (using up any left over sauce/fish milk!)

i usually add tuna, but  i don't have any! i don't have any other tinned fish. the fish i've used is frozen, bought on special offer/reduced! run out of frozen salmon too!

the query is ... what can i bulk it out with? with a mince/meat dish i would use lentils/oats ... no idea what to use other than veggies, but if i add any more, it won't be a fish pie!!!

    thank you xxx
  • Quick mention about pony carrots - I have horses and have always nicked a few from them without a problem. Just think about storage though, might be worth going halves with a friend or neighbour (Neigh - bour? Groan!) as with the horse ones we just keep them in a cool dry place outside, but we do still have problems with them going slimey and black if the neddies haven't been given them all to scoff within about a week. They keep much better in the fridge, but when the weather gets really cold in about January-February time they last for ages in the garage or shed.:T

I'm sticking my fingers in my ears and going "la la la" about being frugal at the moment, because I am now starting weight watchers and am buying a few things like branded tinned soups and ready meals - SOoooo much more expensive than making my own, but its only until I get into the swing of it and find my feet with points and whotnot. hopefully ultimately my food bills will go down because I'm eating less.:rotfl:
  • Afternoon all..i certainly agree with you Weezle, it is a far nicer atmosphere on here.

Mrs.M..you had to mention cornbeef hash..i will have to make some again and dumplings..well if you insist.:rotfl:

I also have a nice jar of lemon curd to use up and am going to make a lemon sponge cake and slice it in two with some in the middle:D

mmmmmm corned beef hash. My fav meal for brunch or even tea with a lovley fried egg on top of each serving.....now if I just had some corned beef!!

Went to asda last night and bought DH several tins of tuna as they are now 50p instead of 1.25. I dont eat fish but he loves it. Must admit I will eat tinned tuna at a push with pasta, cream of mushroom soup and peas but that is about it!

Been working flat out for the past couple of days here and mentally exhausted by end of day so not been very OS and went out for a meal with friends last night. decided I must cook tonight regardless, so thai spiced sausages with sweet potatoe mash and cooked cabbage. very odd combination I know! I really wish I could figure out how to make my own sausages but dont have the equipment, least dont think I do.

Thank you everyone for the feedback on the apples and out of interest I
went to weigh a few of the apples as they are so big and they are nearly a pound in weight each. Going to take me the whole weekend to sort them out I think. Will be worth it come winter tho.

  • hmmm i had corned beef hash for dinner last night, next time tho i'm having a fried egg on top!!

i'm doing an un-frugal thing tonight, having a jar curry sauce, but only cos it was a free gift ;) so i guess it is frugal after all.

naturally - i'm a ww pointer!! if you want to talk about it pm me anytime. i also have a list of food that is low/no points, if you want a copy i can email it over. and i have WAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY to many recipes for it.

Wow ! Everyone's been busy today - just caught up with all the posts :D

Not a very frugal tea for us tonight (lasagne - homemade - curly fries and garlic bread). I would have made some home-made chips if I had time and I need to find a good way to do homemade garlic bread (I'm thinking olive oil and garlic?? - any help appreciated on that one !) The lasagne is a biggie though and will do us for Friday dinner as well. :D

To be honest, this week has just been extremely hectic and I've barely had time to organise anything but i'm trying my best ! What with work, Girl Guides, the garden and the allotment I'm running round like a headless chicken at the moment ! Just wish there was more hours in the day (or at least daylight until 9pm at night ! lol)

Anyway, I've grabbed the pumpkin-squash-thingy (not sure what it was as MIL got the seeds muddled up  ) and it's in the slow cooker with onion, carrot and other various ingredients to hopefully make a nice soup (thanks to Frugalista and Plum Pie for reminding me I needed to do something with the pumpkin !) So, i'm trying to make up for buying the garlic bread and curly fries ! :o

I've got a turkey leg out of the freezer and we're having weezl's korma recipe tomorrow - can't wait to try it !

Have to do some choc cakes for the kids packed lunches tomorrow (I think I need to hide them when they come home from school  :rotfl: ).

Must remember to put the cornbeef hash down in my meal planner for next month, can't wait to try that either !

Been living by lists lately and they seem to be getting longer ! Roll on half-term when I can hopefully have a bit of a rest :p .

Hope everyone has a lovely evening xx

  • JTB2412, I make homemade garlic bread with olive oil, crushed garlic and a pinch of dried mixed herbs. It's also nice with fresh rosemary chopped up in it instead of the mixed herbs if you happen to have rosemary in the garden.
