I think it is like 'free range' but better than what the supermarkets call 'free range'. Or eggs from a hen that has a nice life with a detatched coop in the country.Aim - BUYING A HOUSE  by November 2013!Saved = 100% on 03/07/12 :j0

I want to have a go at making my own ham for sandwiches etc. Recently I read on these forums somewhere about someone cooking their own ham. I have spent ages looking for recipes and can't find any on here. Do I just buy bacon, or gammon? Does anyone know? At Christmas there always seems to be hams etc to buy but at this time of year I am stumped as to what I should ask the butcher? My DSs polished off three packets of ham in one day and I can't afford to feed them expensive foods like ham.
I should also say we have had blackcurrant pie, crumble, and I still have lots to use. I have put some crumbles in the freezer for a day when I am in a hurry. I have run out of dishes and wondered if it is safe to put acidic fruits like rhubarb and blackcurrants into the aluminium ttrays that have the card lids and then to freeze them. I quite fancy making more crumbles and freezing them for the winter.business mortgage £0))''(+ Barclay's business kitchen loan £0=Total paid off was £96105 PPI claimed and received £13527

Poohbear - if you go to a supermarket they will have bacon or gammon joints near the bacon section that you can put in foil and bake in the oven or boil on the hob until tender.
I find my local butchers and deli also sell reasonably priced joints too.
If you want to get flash you can spread mustard and brown sugar over the fat after removing the skin 3/4 of the way through cooking.

I will have a look online at Delias' recipes. I have asked on freecycle for a slicer but haven't had any success yet. I will have to weigh up the cost of a slicer with the cost of buying ready sliced ham. I do have an electric knife which hasn't seen the light of day for years.business mortgage £0))''(+ Barclay's business kitchen loan £0=Total paid off was £96105 PPI claimed and received £13527

Poohbear, if you allow it to cool in the fridge before slicing its not too bad at all to slice thinly by hand. Your electric knife could come in really handy for it.
I manage to slice mine lovely and thin and freeze into sandwich portions so I don't over indulge on its loveliness.

HELP! My cat keeps eating my plants!!
I'm TRYING to grow my own (in a pot my very small flat), but one of my cats keeps eating the whole plant! I most recently lost some Pomodorino tomato plants - the tomatoes are VERY expensive in the shops and VERY delicious, I wanna grow them, but my mad cat can't resist eating anything green and leaf-like!
WHAT can I do to stop the cat? I have tried keeping the cat out of the room the plants are in, but to no avail (especially with the summer here and needing the doors/windows open for air/breeze).
HELP!
Thanks!:j0 -
