Anyone else being a frugalista for father's day?

    My dad loves fresh pineapple.....
But since he had his stoke last year, he cant peel and core one very well.
He asks me most of the time, which I love doing, as I have to quality control it ;).
But sometimes, he struggles on for a good half hour, peeling and coring one, as he says, he doesn't like to bother me :(

I know its not very frugalista... but I have bought him one of those Lakeland pineapple corer/peeler/slicer things - LINKY .
It was only £6.36... a small price, I think, for him to keep a little of his independance :o

Oh... and I will give a cheeky wee bottle of last years HM Rhubarb wine :D...
Very frugalista... as it worked out about 40p a bottle

Bearing in mind Supersizers is back again on t.v. - I thought I'd give a coupla links to recipes of past eras:

    http://www.celtnet.org.uk/recipes/elizabethan/drink.php

    http://www.celtnet.org.uk/recipes/medieval-recipes.php

being to different "pages" of the Celtnet website.

That website is a bit of a little-known "treasure trove" to mine for interesting recipes.

<cough> I was refreshing my memory on this one because I was trying to identify some flowers we have growing in profusion from various garden walls around here....

...errr....dont suppose anyone knows what small purple star-shaped flowers of a very trailing habit that grow along garden walls and have smallish green dagger-shaped leaves are purlease?<cough><winsome smile>

(I dont have a camera of any description to take photos).

Hmmmm....I think that could well be it....will go back for another look.

Thinks....maybe there's a lot of people hereabouts that have had holidays in the former Yugoslavia in t'past then......:D

What was that coach company that used to be around that took people on trips across Eastern European countries at total bargain basement prices?:D - only a rhetorical question ......I studied their details and thought their holidays sounded an awful lot like "hard work" - rather than holidays...

Vermouth - £3.70 for a litre. Well - thats moneysaving just put like that - without taking into account one maybe needs less "sloshed in" than wine for a wine taste (with vermouth being cheaper per ml than wine in the first place). Double moneysaving "hit".

...of course it would be even more moneysaving not to use alcohol in cooking in the first place....hmm...;):D

true, true! I find though that it's nice to have a 'posh' dinner once a week (usually at the weekend) and on Fridays I have adopted the Friday night Fake-away (Weezl's phrase?) which helps us not to feel deprived of anything. icon7.gif

    Hi all

and hello Elfin vermouth is lovely with fish...yummy

Ooh, now that's a good idea - would you use it in a sauce, or cook the fish with it?

Me! Me and my brother got dragged round europe by train when I was about 5, have many fond memories of boiling hot yugoslavian beaches/lakes. And an amazing ability to fall asleep on trains within 5 mins of getting on (defence against 12 hrs of boredom!)

    whoops forgot this

I fried 2 sliced onions and a sliced red pepper and a green one with some garlic until soft

Seasoned with 1 tablespoon italian herbs and a teaspoon smoked paprika,a teaspoon chilli flakes ,salt and pepper then cooled and stirred into a pound of turkey mince along with a beaten egg

Put half the mix in a 2lb loaf tin add 4 hard boiled eggs along the midle and covered with the remaining mixture

arrange some sliced tomatoes on the top and bake at gas 5 until cooked (there was some juice but i tipped it out at the end ) i cooled this and had it cold with salad it was yummy

Hi. not posted on here for ages but I do pop in to have a read of the post when I can. I hope everyone is well and congratulations Weezl on your new arrival :T.

I fancy making the turkey meat loaf for dinner to night, I have a couple of questions about it, 1) do you brown the mince first? 2) can it be frozen?

I liked supersizers last night, but I prefer the ones where they explore longer ago, the 80s dinner party with sun-dried tomatoes and tiramisu sounded like something I'd serve now!!!!

but I'd forgotten all about Um Bongo and Vienetta... (the height of sophistication in my Grandma's house too!)
