I think potty used the same original recipe and method for both, with the tweaks she's posted about, to do a taste comparison, as it's cheaper with the yellow ones...

Was in a rush and stopped off on the way home at Tesco Express. Before I knew it I have spent £46!!:eek:That leaves me only £6.73 for the rest of the month!!! Thats a panic now.
I really am struggling to downsize.
Bank balance has dwindled, savings have gone, debts have risen.
I have got to focus on my Debts or I will be in real trouble before I know it.
this is just not good.When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Yes, thats right Weezl... I did follow your recipe, but just tweaked it slightly
Tweaked recipe as follows-with costings :cool:
150g yellow split peas 14p - these had to be soaked, and were, for about 10 hours.
2 medium onions 10p
3 cloves garlic 12p
2 tablespoons sesame oil or olive oil 10p
1 tsp cumin 3p
1 tsp paprika 3p
1 teaspoon sea salt, to taste (may sub regular salt) 1p
1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper, to taste 1p
Soak the yellow split peas, preferably over night. Then wash, drain and place in a saucepan.
Add the water bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium, and simmer, covered, for 50 minutes.
Chop the onions and the garlic very finely.
In a large frying pan, heat the oil.
Add the garlic, onions, and spices and saute over medium heat, stirring, for about 10 minutes, or until the onions and garlic are brown.
When the split peas are done, stir them thoroughly to mash, add the onion mixture.
Season to taste with sea salt, and pepper.
54p in total... so it just depends how you portion it up
It does take a bit longer to use the yellow split peas, because of the soaking and the longer cooking time. But you get a completely different texture, so it is worth it. And I found that the bread crumbs were not needed, as the yellow split peas are not as moisture absorbant as the lentils.
I also think, that both could host a variety of different flavourings... curry, chilli, or whatever takes your fancy0 -

mooloo - tell us how many days the food and £6.73 has to last for as well.
I made spanish nettle stew the other day - was very liquidy too much so for a stew so turned it into soup (blitzed the lumps!) and tasted bloomin gorgeous!! However... the colour was much to be desired and it has been nicknamed diarrohea soup by my boys...:rotfl:

Frugal tea for us today
for the two of us, made a tray of Hm potato wedges then splodged half a tin of tuna, mixed with two whoopsed spring onions and 2 tablespoons reduced cal tesco value mayo all over and topped with a small handful of grated mozarella and similar of red cheddar and stuffed them back in the oven for about 10mins til bubbly and golden. Served with HM garlic bread (whoopsed ciabatta and hm garlic butter) and some salad. Enough tuna left in the tin to mix up for DS butties tomoz. Result.Eat food, not edible food-like items. Mostly plants.0 -

You're a sight more inventive than I am our weezl with the way you think about putting things together - and that seems to be encouraging the rest of us.
I'm just about moving away from my stance of "give me a load of recipe books/I'll pick a recipe I fancy and buy in the ingredients" - 'tis a revelation to me to think another way round like you do.....:D
Anyways....'tis all useful learning...I've had a friend round recently for a coupla meals...and he's been told "This is the protein food element and this is the filler food element - now go and pick your own salad in the garden from whatever you fancy that I'm growing there.." He seemed to rather like the idea...so I said "think I've just thought up how 21st century dinner parties are going to be...brings a new meaning to pick your own...this is the basics...now go and pick your own veggie/salad to accompany it".:D
Sure 'tis a different way of looking at things....hand the guest a bowl and tell them to pick part of their own dinner...but, if hes anything to go by, 'twill be popular....0 -

queen of string your dinner sounds delicious! When you get to canada, how about looking at the road side veg sellers (lots of people with lots of land and interested in smallholding/farming) rather than the supermarkets. We were stunned in canada and the states by how little unprocessed stuff there is in the supermarkets, the healthy eating aisle just seemed to be lots of packets aimed at lo-carb or lo-fat etc...:D

I liked supersizers last night, but I prefer the ones where they explore longer ago, the 80s dinner party with sun-dried tomatoes and tiramisu sounded like something I'd serve now!!!!

Weezl - cant say the thought of 1980s food attracted me either on Supersizers - as you say...still using elements of that now...so no big difference.
1066 now....hmmm...thats a bit different...I'll watch that one with interest to see what tips I can pick up...
Re the "pick part of your own dinner" - well...'tis only part of my basic "feed someone else ethos"...I dont want my guests to go hungry...so laying out things and telling them to help themself means I have a clear conscience. If I've told them to help themself to the various food things - then that means I know they've had enough and havent had anything they dont like/are allergic to. Its just an "how to have an easy life" thing in my book:D
And re handing a guest a bowl to "pick their own" - for some reason I've sorta taken to the idea of (large) bowls to serve food up in these days. I have plates....but they stay stored in a cupboard - as I and any guests just use large bowls to eat from. Summat to do with having read that Buddhist monks go out "begging" for their food each day and it gets put into their food bowl - so my logical mind said "Hmmm....if they can get a days worth of food in a (sizable) bowl then I guess that means thats about the right amount of food for need" (though guests are urged to refill said large - dinnerplate size - bowls as much as they want).0
