When I make fruit cakes I follow what I was told in cookery classes years ago (well not that many I'm only 42
) Coat any fruit in some flour and it will stop it sinking to the bottom of the cake tin. This certainly works with cherries and other dried fruits so it should certainly work with dates. Cake sounds fab by the way

I don't mind how you travel ceridwen, a broomstick is a frugal choice....
I'm going to make some savoury pies today, I had made an excess of pastry a while ago and have just defrosted the 'remains'. Corned beef pie for Mr Weezl and nettle and lentil pie for me...;)
Will post results later...
update on adding syrup and ginger to one of the loaves of no-knead bread, it's very nice but not quite sweet enough, so will tweak a bit more before posting about it!:D

Mmm that bread sound nice esp is it is no knead!
I'd love to meet up but Wales is a bit too far away for me unfortunately (with an old poorly dog who can't leave too long or take too far), damm and blast living oop north!
I'd love to meet the 'real' people, maybe next time eh?
Spinach and potato curry for me today using up a couple of bunches of spinach.
Only problem is I am out of space in the freezer due to all the frugalling work. I've split up packs of foods into single portions and batch cooked tomato sauce and soup.
Potato curry for a few days it is then! Will have to use up the lovely lentil dahl too with tonights meal and I am having a go at making chapatis for the first time too. Found a nice spinach gnocchi recipe too (different to the last one I made) could have this and use up a tomato sauce portion. What a decision eh?!
Then I really need to use things up out of the freezer. On the plus side I only bought milk this weekend (better do the storecupboard challenge this week!)
Anyway I am off to carry on the wardrobe clear out for my peace of mind and declutter mission, it's taking way longer than I thought it wouldfinal unsecured debt to repay currently £8333Proud to be Dealing With my DebtDFW Nerd 1154 Long Haul 1550 -

Just made Spinach Gnocchi for tea.
250g Spinach 30p
200g Potatoes 15p
1/2 tsp Nutmeg grated ?
1/2 tsp Salt
1 egg yolk Don't have a cost for the last 3 ingredients
46 pieces of gnocchi
estimate 2 meals (generous ones)
Serve with tomato sauce in freezer 43p for 2 portions
Cost 43p + 45p = 88p
Cost per portion = 44p
Could stretch this further I am sure for 3-4 meals making it 22p per portion at the cheapestfinal unsecured debt to repay currently £8333Proud to be Dealing With my DebtDFW Nerd 1154 Long Haul 1550 -
