On Mysupermarket it looks like the Tesco Value powder is the same price / kg as Soda Crystals so it won't work out any cheaper using them, however it might be worth giving them a go for getting stains/smells out of Fergie's reusable nappies better than the powder. We use them a lot on out mountain biking and walking clothes which gets really stinky with sweat and often caked in mud.
I do the same, and find it gets all smells out. As DD has a bowel condition i can report that said undies come up great..and no irritation, always a bonus. I do use ecover where possible in washing up liquid etc, but the truth of the matter is that it has never worked for my heavy washing. Soap nuts have been good for general wash though and have used them quite a bit. I quite like them, have to laugh when they escape the bag though and my wash is on full spin..little brown bits everywhere:o:rotfl:Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?

I've never tried making my own laundry gloop but I found a step-by-step guide here and it doesn't look too difficult but I don' think I've got anywhere to store such big tubs!:rolleyes:0

I think that is basically the recipe i use 1 cup grated soap and half a cup each of borax and soda crystals you can use household soap (where the stain removers are in the shops, fairy etc) but i use the stuff you wash your body with as we have sensitive skin i think the borax is a stain booster .........................makes a good jobs of cleaning the washing machine too its almost scent free by the time its washed so not like traditional detergents although you can add essential oils but i think you would need a lot
I use an old mug to measure it out and put it straight in the drum

I fried 2 sliced onions and a sliced red pepper and a green one with some garlic until soft
Seasoned with 1 tablespoon italian herbs and a teaspoon smoked paprika,a teaspoon chilli flakes ,salt and pepper then cooled and stirred into a pound of turkey mince along with a beaten egg
Put half the mix in a 2lb loaf tin add 4 hard boiled eggs along the midle and covered with the remaining mixture
arrange some sliced tomatoes on the top and bake at gas 5 until cooked (there was some juice but i tipped it out at the end ) i cooled this and had it cold with salad it was yummy

Well the first wash of the day (lights) is just on the line and I can report that 40g of wahing powder and a tablespoon of soda crystals have got all the stains out. There were stains from lollies, chocolate, pasta sauce and mud on yesterdays washing too
I haven't put any soda crystals in the darks wash that is currently on just 40g of powder.

oooooh shaz, I'm drooling on m'keyboard! Looks fab lass! Are you sure you're resting that pesky shoulder enough?!
thanks all for the thoughts on laundry powder... I'll try 20g of nappisan and 20g of washing powder as this next load is only nappies. DH gets very worried about his work clothes smelling of wee!

That does look lovely, shaz. Lucky family!
Very interesting all this about the soap powder. I've just checked the weight of my normal scoopful and I'm using approx 86g a time.
This is still much less than the pack is advising - they give amounts in mls but I've weighed and converted.
Will give it a go at 50g with some soda crystals thrown in when I think it needs a bit more oomph.
I love soda crystals as they are great for clearing slow draining sinks. Sorted mine a treat.
I bought bags and bags of the stuff in the autumn when Asda were selling it off for 12p a pack. Thought they were discontinuing it but they had it all stocked up and rocketed the price a few weeks later. :cool:AUGUST GROCERY CHALLENGE £115.93/ £250

Sorry if i've missed it but have you worked out a "per use" costing for this - I'd be interested to see what it's like.
I use the value powder either from Mr T or Mr M - I dump it into a large container with a whole pack of soda crystals and can say it works a treat.
If I'm doing 3 loads of washing in a day then I never put powder in on the 3rd wash....my dad (a former washing machine engineer) has always sworn there's plenty of soap residue left to get a 3rd load clean....I tend not to include anything that's heavily soiled but am yet to be disappointed by the results."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W.
