CW - have been lurking for ages (months and months and months) but feel i have to share this tip. my compost was just smouldering away smelling quite bad, but then i read somewhere that you should add a spadeful of soil to the bin each time you put a load of stuff in. it works and i now have the most gorgeous compost!

thanks for that tip dpixie...keep posting!

  • ISOM, this is my usual crumble recipe

100g each of fat (butter, or spread if I am cutting back on saturated fat), sugar, flour and oats. I then put in a good handful of pumpkin seeds

You can vary the sugar to go with the fruit. With apples I would stick with ordinary granulated, plums would tend to have the sticky dark stuff etc

I add sesame seeds as well as or instead of the pumpkin seeds. And the flour can be white or wholemeal. Granary doesn't work too well as the 'bits' go too hard and crack your teeth.

You can add lemon or orange zest for apple, some cinnamon/mixed spice for plums. And then there's nuts - toasted hazlenuts for apple, toasted maple/walnuts for plum. Etc etc

the OS version is the plain fat/sugar/flour/oats of course!
  • tried this yesterday in my search for gluten free and vegan recipes for the local healthfood shop. It was very scrummy. I replaced the eggs with an egg replacement product and used Pure marg (vegan). Because it had no eggs in it it was very soft and crumbly, so I will add some cornflour next time, that should bind it a bit

Finally had some good news from my son who after months and months of not working and being a genuine, i know everything about everything and little about nothing has finally managed to get a job! only temp through xmas but you never know and at least will give him a bit of work history!

Also found out on Sunday that DH is going to be a grand dad again....this will be number 8 for him now! but then he did have 6 kids of his own:eek: As for me my one has been enough!!!

having a sandwich for tea as hubby is out again tonight but will hopefully be home tomorrow night or friday morning. Will be glad when his new job starts and he can stop driving trucks again as he hates it now.

Took a break earlier today and got some aida so will start a new project or two tonight:j will take it on holiday with us this friday for the week to work on inbetween sight seeing. Cant wait! Managed to get a sun holiday to france and then just added a weekend on both ends. Really cheap it was. so doing belgium and france both

Still have lots of granny smith apples and trying to figure out what to do with them before we go. If I cook them and flavour do you think they would be ok for in pies or crumbles? Suppose they should be but never know.

ISOM -was it you that had the dowerhouse chutney recipe? If so, DH positively loves it and puts it on his sandwiches every day. Thank you for the recipe

off to finish off a bit of work then off to relax tonight

  • BTW, in looking for packaging to sell food, I came across this. Don't know if anyone is interested, but I thought you might like to know about the chinese takeaway containers they sell at around 10p each (depending on size). They are freezer and microwave proof and stack nicely. I have used old takeaway containers in my cupboards for years, it easy to see what is in them and I freeze stuff in them too

Have now got 2 large boxes of them in the living room - only hope I can sell some of this food! If not, I have enough boxes to last me a very long time!!

  • CW- how do you do that 'here' thing, and how do you point it to just 1 post?

I can do the 'here' thing if I paste the link into Word, change the text to 'here' then paste it back into the post! It would be handy to do it properly, and I have no idea how to point to 1 post, I can just do it to an entire page!

To start with, open the post you want to point to in a new window/tab in your browser -- you do this by clicking on the post number in the top right hand corner of the post

Now highlight the web address in your browser address bar, right mouse click, and select copy from the drop down menu

Then go to where you want to add the link. Type the word you want (such as here), highlight that word, and click on the createlink.gificon above the message box you're typing in.

When the pop up window comes up, highlight what's in it, then right mouse click, then select paste. This should drop in the web address you saved before.

Now just click on OK and you're done.
