Have I just read that right - a bookshop is selling frozen veg? I don't know the Works, so I'm not sure if it is a bizarre mix of books/frozen food that it sells or if I am being a bit of a moomin and reading what you wrote wrong!0 -

Sooooo sorry!!! not Frozen veg!!! I meant packets of SEEDS!!!!!
Trust me.....;):D:D:D
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -
LOL! when you said packets, I just assumed you meant 'frozen'!
You missing out one word and my making huge assumptions! I was a bit surprised by the mix of items the shop sold and confused as to why you not having a garden made a difference!!!
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
....and NOW I notice the title of your post! Why oh why didn't I read your post properly before asking stupid questions?:D0 -
Evening all,
:D:D:D
I'll just pop out of lurkerdom, to mention this programme that's on tonight:
'The True Cost of Cheap Food
Thursday 22 January
8:00pm - 9:00pm
Channel 4
Documentary. Food critic Jay Rayner examines what goes into budget food products and asks why low cost often means low quality. Enlisting the help of Michelin-starred chef Heston Blumenthal, Jay discovers some of the tricks retailers use to make products look more attractive and finds out just what goes into a 5p sausage. Jay argues that, given their market dominance and huge profits, supermarkets have a responsibility to provide more nutritious, cheap food in tough economic times.'
Since in my challenge i was such an advocate of the 4p sausage, I thought I'd better see what you all thought of the documentary! I suspect it will make our vegetarian friends (hello ceridwen!:beer:) and those who always buy happy meat (hello ISOM:beer:) feel rightfully smug!
We are all still doing ok here. When the midwife puts a tape measure on my bump, fergus is a little bit smaller than he should be.:eek:
So we went out for a steak!!!:rotfl:Oh dear, my frugal ways are becoming a hazy memory, along with my feet, geeky brain and memory. Haven't seen those for a while now either...:rotfl:
Hope it's ok with the mods and all of you to pop back in for a check in every so oft, 'specially when I have something relevant to say about the challenge I was doing?:D
Speaking of which, I made a big batch of corned beef hash on the weekend, and then totted up the price per portion:o. Dear reader, this has doubled in price since this time last year, according to mysupermarket :eek::eek::eek:. I thought I should include this info here, as anyone seeing the title of this thread may be wondering if 50p a day is still possible, and scratching their heads!

Nice to see you - to see you nice
One is always pleased to see Weezl
.......now my brain hurts. 'Tis only breakfast time after all and I've not long woken up;)
When I wake up properly I shall have to go off and think O.S. thoughts about spinning out mince (ie quorn mince in my case). Cor...what a difference in price between shops - a few days back, when I last bought some, it was £2 in Tesco - but about £3.50 odd in Sainsburys.....Even though I got the £2 version - I decided "If those OS'ers can spin out minced meat - then I can spin out quorn" and decided to grate up some carrot to put in my casserole with it - 'twas fine (translation for Penny = it tasted nice).0 -
Hi all, hope all is well in weezl land! Just a quick question!!! Can i freeze mushrooms?? If so, do i need to do anything with them first?
They will just be used for bolognaise or stew. Thanks x x x
Welcome back Weezl! I hope Fergus enjoyed the steak!
I have a further question on storing mushrooms - wonder if you knowledgable people can help please?
I have one of those mushroom storage bags from Lakeland. It's fabric bag with a black lining so the mushrooms are dry and dark. Well, I forgot about it for a while and when I opened it up, there were some completely dried up mushrooms in there! They look okay - do you reckon I'd be safe to try them, maybe in casserole?
Also - what do you think about this as a method for storing any future surplus?!Miggy

Re those mushrooms - well...I can only give my own personal viewpoint...which is that I would be thinking "well....I can buy dried mushrooms in shops...and expensive they are too" - so I personally would try them.
....goes off waiting to see if anyone shoots me down in flames for this....or this being the O.S. Board - amend that to gently puts me right.....
(PS; Stage whisper - on a totally unrelated note "Is it me or is it hot in here" - in this context the question is "Is it me.....or has MSE changed the appearance of the Forum pages?". They never used to spread out rather more left to right and have the name bit in yellow - guess the yellow means that MSE has changed it, rather than my fiddling around trying to get back a bit from my Google toolbar that has gone AWOL is the reason....??)0
