Re the mushrooms I have found that you can get yummy dried mushrooms cheaply at chinese food stores...much cheaper than supermarkets...hello - nice to see you, to see you nice!!Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! Even in the darkest moments, love and hope are always possible.0 -
we love our veggies and I bought rather a lot of brussels sprouts that then for one reason or another weren't being used. I thought I had a recipe using sprouts somewhere in a soup and had a rummage. Found one in the Covent Garden Book of Soups for Brussels Sprout and Chestnut Soup. Tried it and it was delicious. I know sprouts aren't for everyone, but it doesn't taste very sprouty, although it has the same rather windy effect!0

Hello Lesley, ceridwen and ISOM!
twas a freecycle type adventure...
I have got rid of 16 things on freecycle in the last week (phew! exhausting) the most complex of which was a gas cooker and fridge freezer (left over from our lodgers).
We posted a message saying to please read carefully, and said that we didn't want to make any money from them, but didn't want to lose any either IYSWIM. So we asked that the collector would be willing to have the cooker de-installed by a professional.
2 lovely chaps duly came round and took not only the cooker, extractor hood, fridge freeezer, but also a bamboo blind and a cutlery rack (!). And they had agreed to meet their plumber at my house at 4.
By 4.45, they had to go, and left me with £60 cash to pay the plumber and said they'd come again in the morning for the cooker. It's ok they have been now and all's well.
Fortunately ISOM who is braver and more assertive than me, and less hormonal had also popped round. She calmed me as I waited for the plumber. He came 1 hr and 15 mins late, made lots of jokes about sticking pipes together with chewing gum, laughed at ISOM when she said she wanted to keep the copper pipe for a slug repellant, and took the pipe away anyway (thief!) and took a large chunk out of one of my newly sanded boards having apparently tried to rip it up without loosening the screws! He charged me an extra £20 for capping it off uder the floorboards! The icing on the cake came when ISOM bravely asked the plumber for a receipt so we could show the freecycler we hadn't run off with his cash. He borrowed a scrap of paper, and scrawled his name, mobile and a signature all the time mocking us for asking for one-cheeky!
Well, I would have been all flummoxed by all of this, but ISOM remained calm and humorous throughout. It was so good to have a friend there.
She was also careful to let them know that we weren't a lesbian couple having a baby together.I didn't know blokes speculated about that sort of thing, but apparently they do!
Oh boy, what a day, but thanks to the forum I had a pal to help me out with it all!:j
Anyway, feel like I ought to say something about healthy frugal eating now.... But I've gone blank!
Love to all,
Weezl AM and Fergus xxx

Wow, talk about making hard work out of being generous! What a cheeky plumber, gets them a bad name when you get just one like that.
Our local freecycle often has re-posts where people have asked to receive something and then haven't had the decency to turn up OR tell the donor that they had changed their mind. I had one like that and it is really irritating. Although the other times that I have successfully freecycled something give me a lovely warm glow.0 -
We are always pleased to see you.
Nice to see you - to see you nice

.......now my brain hurts. 'Tis only breakfast time after all and I've not long woken up;)
When I wake up properly I shall have to go off and think O.S. thoughts about spinning out mince (ie quorn mince in my case). Cor...what a difference in price between shops - a few days back, when I last bought some, it was £2 in Tesco - but about £3.50 odd in Sainsburys.....Even though I got the £2 version - I decided "If those OS'ers can spin out minced meat - then I can spin out quorn" and decided to grate up some carrot to put in my casserole with it - 'twas fine (translation for Penny = it tasted nice).
I spin out my vege mince with carrot, lentils and oats, pretty much like I stretch out the real mince for the kids. Obviously it'd be slightly pointless adding dried veggie mince to the frozen veg mince thoughAlways tastes fine to us! I tend to use the realeat one in the green pack, as it absorbs loads of water you get much more for your money than with the quorn stuff. Besides quorn always makes me teeth squeak

Lol, thank you for the giggle Weezl and ISOM. I've had a rubbish morning (won't go into details) but you've just brightened my day
Just taking 5 out before we start to re-organise DS bedroom and put up his new bed (his old cabin bed is being collected by a freecycler sometime soon :T ).
Hope all is well with you, AM and Fergus - sending all our love and best wishes for the 'big day'

Hi our Weezl
That plumber got out the door that day then without being physically assaulted with that bit of pipe then......but then our Weezl is much nicer than I am:cool: British workmen....dont get me started.........
....brightens....."thinks.....wonder whether they might start doing a better standard of work now in view of the Credit Crunch and all that".......okay...okay....I can dream.....0 -
Re those mushrooms - well...I can only give my own personal viewpoint...which is that I would be thinking "well....I can buy dried mushrooms in shops...and expensive they are too" - so I personally would try them.
....goes off waiting to see if anyone shoots me down in flames for this....or this being the O.S. Board - amend that to gently puts me right.....
Thanks ceridwen and ISOM! Next time I have some smallish mushrooms looking for a home I will set aside a few for the accidental drying treatment and see how they go. I assume if they aren't too big to dry quickly and I dry them just as I did the others, I will get the same results... we shall see.
ISOM, thanks for the idea about Chinese supermarkets. There isn't one nearby but my sister might be able to help out there. Alternatively I could set up in a (very small) business of my own.
Dried mushrooms by the 1/2 oz., anyone?Miggy
