Weezl, thank you for all your help in teaching even grandmothers to cut down healthily...don't think that I will ever get to your level of economy but I have certainly learnt lots, and feel privileged to have been 'in' on your progress through pregnancy and will certainly be waiting with bated breath for news and pics of Fergus on arrival.
Take care of yourself and keep in touch with us all

In weather as cold as we are having at present - that cold air gets right down inside the lungs - well thats how it feels to me - chilly from the inside out. I could do with some "internal central heating".
Thinking to myself that a nice thick stew would be just the thing to eat now.
Anyone got a suitable vegetarian stew recipe I could use please? Personally - I dont like turnips, swedes, parsnips and sweet potatoes - so I wouldnt use them. But I'm fine with all other vegetables. I was thinking of something along the lines of an infinitely adaptable "base" recipe for such a stew and I could use whatever vegetables I have (out of the ones I like) and throw in things like lentils, barley, cooked rice, whatever to bulk it up and/or have some dumplings with it. (I've got a packet of mixed stew thingies for instance - barley, dried peas, lentils and its just been sitting there - as I'm not sure what to do with it).0 -
Having been an avid lurker of this thread can I firstly say thanks to Weezl, I have enjoyed it so much and learned loads!
Now that I have started joining in a bit I feel quite excited that I may be able to help you ceridwen. I have a recipe which may be suitable for your needs? I sometimes make this and then add dumplings to turn it into a right good rib sticking meal!
Farmhouse Soup
Onions chopped
Carrots "
Potatoes "
Celery "
Leeks "
Handful of 'soup or broth' mix soaked overnight
Stock or water
Mixed herbs
Chuck the lot in a saucepan, simmer til cooked then season to taste. Liquidise but not til smooth - I leave it a bit lumpy.
Add dumplings and simmer again til cooked.
Sorry, no quantities given - I just bung in whatever is available, but not too much stock - as a rule just to cover veg as cooking - can always add more when liquidised or mashed.
Hope this helps.0 -
Thanks for that - have you got a recipe for those dumplings purlease?0

I just use the one on the side of the suet mix box and add a few mixed herbs if I fancy. Long live Atora!0

My usual stew base is just caramelised onions, garlic and carrots.
I can then decide if I want my stew 'aromatic' (add cumin and lemon zest), 'hot' (add paprika and chilli) or herby (sage and rosemary).
I usually use tinned tomatoes and chicken stock for liquid.
These flavour work well with all kinds of meat and any veg.0 -
Thanks, Weezl, and everyone that has helped to make this a great thread
I've really enjoyed it.
