Shaz...what a lovely neat, productive bed of veggies...I still suffer from dealing with OH who considers that you need feet rather than inches between individual veg...

    Hi everyone
I've managed to scrape together thirty pounds to go and get some essentials this evening. Once I've got petrol and baby food/formula I think I'm going to have ten pounds left to get as many meals as poss for me and hubby to last at least til Tuesday but maybe longer. Which supermarket is doing the best deals/cheapest food at the moment? I have a lidl a tesco, an asda and a morrison very close by. Am a bit wary of tesco and have been hovering between the other 3 for a while and wondered what deals and tips others had:confused:

You could buy a chicken and stretch it out to have roast on Sunday, chicken and chips on Monday and chicken soup on Tuesday. So then, you'd need potatoes for the roast, some other veggies (maybe a bag of frozen peas/sweetcorn) which you could also then use in your soup.

If you can get some cheap veggies could do vegetable stir fry and add the rice to it.

Obviously you can do pasta and sauce one night or for lunch.

Also, check out this thread, full of useful info for buying food for very little money http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1129333

I can't advise on which shop to go to, as I don't have any of those that close to me.

  • My supermarket.com see the link below does price comparisons for the big 4; Tescos, Sains. Asda and Waitrose. You can check the deals there. It doesn't do Morrisons though

Lidl have good veg deals at the moment. Sprouts for 25p a bag for example and 2 unsmoked/smoked gammon steaks for £1.00.

Can't remember any other Lidl deals at the moment. Hope this helps

there are 50 leeks,16 cabbages, 16 red kale plants and 16 purple sprouting broccoli plants

this is "the gordon brown bed" named after the high rise of food prices by hubby

the 4 sleepers cost £40 the soil was freecyled the plants cost £10 (we did it too late in the summer for seeds)

haven't used much yet but will save us a fortune esp the leeks

    Hi Shaz

That looks like Square Foot Gardening style to me. How big is this "bed" please?
