I actually think the multi-versions of Vista are part of the problem why it hasn't been so successful.
IMO it's ridiculous to offer "home" users these various options, most non-technical people won't have a clue what the advantages and disadvantages are, they may end up paying more than they need, or buying the less well featured version to find they are missing out on something they need.
It's not the same as buying a car with different spec, you can't just add a serial number to a dashboard to enable 4wd, xenon headlamps or air con, although some simpler features may have the wiring loom installed, they still need installation of switches, or more facilities.
Apple have definitely got it right, one version fits all for both home and professional users + a server version for servers only.
I'd have thought MS would have learned it's lesson from the insecure mess of XP Home, vs tighter and more secure XP Pro - but there you go.
No doubt that's why we are just about to be bombarded with new Vista adverts featuring Seinfeld.0

Yawn....another muppet who hasn't done their homework.
They did or is UAC, running IE in a sandbox and locking out the kernel space to drivers and applications (which is why there were a lot of driver issues in the early days) just some kind of fantasy?0

I admit, it is really difficult to look at a box marked Home Basic and Home Premium and decide what features best suit your needs. It's not the same as buying a car with different spec, you can't just add a serial number to a dashboard to enable 4wd, xenon headlamps or air con, although some simpler features may have the wiring loom installed, they still need installation of switches, or more facilities.
You can't just change the serial number and things are unlocked, you have to purchase an upgrade disc to make the changes. The analogy stills holds weight.Apple have definitely got it right, one version fits all for both home and professional users + a server version for servers only.
Apple are fortunate that a single SKU for a workstation works. You buy a Mac and it has OS-X. Microsoft are not fortunate enough to be able to tie in their product with hardware for ease of sale, they have multiple demographics they have to cater for, each with different requirements.I'd have thought MS would have learned it's lesson from the insecure mess of XP Home, vs tighter and more secure XP Pro - but there you go.
As Connor pointed out, they have redesigned Vista to inherently be infinitely more secure than XP was. There is no reason why every application on your computer should run at administrator level. Forcing software vendors to write their programs in this new manner means less security exploits, which equals safer computing. No doubt that's why we are just about to be bombarded with new Vista adverts featuring Seinfeld.
To be perfectly honest, I find them much more amusing than the dross that was "I'm a PC and I'm a Mac"0

Isn't Ultimate more secure than the other versions?0
