Digital TV Cost Cutting Article - Discuss What You've Been Offered

On 20th March I phoned sky to cancel my subscription as I was paying £21.00 a month and felt it was a waste especially that I now have a digital tv which works brilliantly, with a slot ready for top up if I want - for some extra channels I would only pay £7.50 a month.
The plus side was that I could also use the digibox to record onto my dvd recorder and at the same time watch other channel on freeview.
I was persuaded to take a 3 month offer at £10.50 a month which was ok. I am now going to phone them again to cancel, giving one month's notice - I do like sky, but at the price I would rather be without - as long as I can still Se the sky box ofcourse!
Unfortunately the sky (pace) digibox has started playing up, it stutters/freezes, goes out of sink, and I think it's on it's way out! I keep resetting it but nothing doing. I know I can buy a second hand one, but should I say to them that as well as I don't think it's worth keeping sky as I can get used to what channels I have on my freeview tv, that my digibox is on it's way out and do not intend to buy another? Do you think they would offer me another box? I don't see any point in a sky+ box as I have a hard drive dvd recorder (with timeslip) and that would mean paying extra anyway.
Any thoughts?0 -
First thing I thought is that sounds like a dish alignment problem, not your digibox. I do think they'll probably offer an engineer to check it out, for free if you push to cancel.0

Thanks for that Tin, I automatically assumed it was the box as I have had it for over 7 years, but you could be right. I will push to cancel as I could be without it easily (well get used to not having it) and I'm sure at some point they would contact me in the future. It won't really bother me not having it as the DTV I have is so good, and with the use of the digibox to record from - I would be bothered if I couldn't use the digibox as freeview and also I have a digisender to send signal from digibox to the upstairs bedroom tv.0

I phoned up sky to upgrade to sky+ .They told me it will cost £199 for the sky+ box and £65 for installation.I wasn't very pleased at all.I have seen promotion adverts for new customers sky+ for £89 .I thought iIshould atleast get that if not more because I have sky for a few years now.I put the phone down and followed MSE technics.Phoned follwing day and asked to cancel my package.Straight to cancellation department. He asked me why I want to cancel? I told him that its unfair for us existing customer to treat differently than new customers. They can get it for £89. if i have to come back as new customer in few months time so be it.or I will get cable. All of a sudden its so nice.he offered me £65 for sky+box and no installation fee.Thank you very much Iam very happy now.I have sky+ now its much better.I hope this may help other people too.0

My husband phoned to cancel our Sky package two weeks ago and we were supposed to be getting cut off on the 27th May as we were already paid up. They phoned today and offered us 6 months half price full package which I was happy to agree to.0

Wow six months is great. I got a reduction to half price for 3months (on full package) and that has just ran out so I rang them just to cut down my package and when she said it'd come to £35 that was still more than I expected to pay. I told her this and told her I expected to reduce it down to thirty. Funnily enough they said they has a special offer on at the moment which enabled me to keep the full package for... yes you guessed it £30.00. For three months. I wish I had said £25.00 now !! Still a saving of 12.50 per month though for the sake of the phone call.0

I called last night, Said I wished to cancel etc etc.
He said all the usual why , what channels do you watch and then put me through to a VERY nice man who explained that thay had a little known offer and he could reduce my cost down to 75p per month for 3 months !! Im only on the £21 p/m package and thats a massive help to us at the moment.
So pleased I bothered as nearly didnt .

Phoned Sky to ask for a Sky+ box for the same price as a new customer, i.e. £89. Was told this offer was only available to new customers, not existing. I asked why loyal customers were treated so badly and was told in no uncertain terms that I was at liberty to cancel if I so wished but would not be able to resubscribe and receive new customer offers for five years! If I resubscribed before then, I would be treated as an current customer! I spoke to two operators who were both very rude. I asked to be put through to Cancellations, where I spoke to a very nice lady and upon explaining my situation, was offered Sky+ for £49.00, no installation fee and no ongoing costs! I have also been offered Saturday installation!! Result.0
