I think there are 2 sides to the territory business. I canvass my territory every campaign except for when I was starting out as Sales Leader so only canvassed my regular cusotmers. During this time, a new rep decided to canvass my territory and at the same time upset my regular customers. They weren't happy about her coming on my territory when they still had pending orders with me.

And even now she is just picking roads and going canvassing which is fine, if no one actually canvasses them and there are potential customers but why upset already established customers?

Yes we are self employed to a certain extent but it is like any self employment, if you are working for someone as a self employed person, you are still working within their rules and regulations.

I think canvassing roads in the hope that you can pick up new customers is fine except when you know the road is already allocated. And to have 3/4 reps canvassing the same road... how do the customers end up feeling?

So it is one of those who is right, who is wrong?

Am told that Area Managers are actually employees of Avon, in which case the above email is hardly promoting a professional image!

i was told that by my upline too which makes sense why ASM's treat reps the way they do once they've been signed up-it's all to do with targets

there is no right or wrong. as you say, some are not happy with reps, some customers are not happy with poachers. I think its fair game to ask but if the response is not a positive one, stay away. I started doing avon initially to get a constant supply of the creams i use cos our reps stopped doing it after a few campaigns every time. I have not made a fortune but have stuck mostly with family and friends. i have a shop near me where the staff like to order (mostly girls working there) and i am going to check out a few other shops near by but i am worried about breaking rules by doing so. i only got into the shop i am in because i have a friend working there.

    Hi All,

I really need some help. I have been really ill and haven't been able to deliver all of my avon orders and my next order is due today. All of my customers know the situation and have told me to deliver them when I can but that won't be until next week when my husband gets back and he can do it. The trouble is that they have emailed the next order to me, which is due today, but I won't be able to order until I pay for my previous orders. I still have all the stuff at home and was wondering could I credit the stuff and still put in my order? Someone please help

at worst, you can place your order late but you may have to pay a delivery charge if ordered after the cutoff. let them know that there will be a delay again..

I have missed a few times and done that. i have managed to place orders while owing money but i haven't waited til last minute to do so so not sure. i always add it as an 'additional order' for prev campain and you can go back up to two campaigns then. hth.

  • You can credit the outstanding deliveries, then once delivered hold on to the money until you are re charged for them. I have had to do this before and know of other reps that have done it. HTH
  • Suppose this territory issue wouldn't actually be a problem if all agents actually asked potential new customers face to face rather than just putting a book through the door i.e. it's easy to just ask and be told 'thanks, we already have an agent'. Can't see how that can cause any offence to anyone.

Also, if Avon actually issued a list of which streets were allocated/taken and/or free, that would help too. New agents have no way of discovering which streets are 'officially allocated' unless they actually cold-canvass them, do they?

That's a good point Christine, if people knocked and asked.

ASM's are supposed to have a record of which Rep does which street, so they can allocate the free territory. But at the moment I think this is not quite working correctly. Although there have been a lot of emails from my SL asking for info, so think they are trying to rectify this situation as quickly as possible.
