Got 4 packs of Mozerella, the sort that comes in a lump with liquid round it, 20p each in tesco as they are sell by tomorrow. Can I freeze it, if so, do I drain the horrible watery stuff away first?
Thanks in advance

I've frozen mozzarella before, still in the liquid.
It seemed fine - froze with no problems, took quite a while to defrost though... obviously make sure it's thoroughly defrosted before use!!0 -
[post=675236]HERE[/post] are some weblinks for freezing food (in the section on freezing). Hopefully you will find some hints there.
Edited to add: There is another discussion on freezing cheese HERE

Hi you could make a huge salad with tomatoes and basil and sweetcorn. It looks great and it tastes even more great.Or you could put a couple of slices on thick toast and add any ingredient on top and put it in the oven until it browns (cook the toppings beforehand):Dhalf scottish half italian :100%moneysaver0

i always thought a sell by date was different to a use by date . i keep cheese for ages even tho it says use within 3 days of opening.
but pizza sounds a fab idea.0 -
Don't forget in an emergency you could feed at least some of it to the birds - chop it in to little bits (robins & wagtails particularly love cheese) - not very MSE I know, but the little feathered guys need all the help they can get in the cold weather, and for the sake of 20p worth of cheese.....There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't
In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice0 -
Sell By dates are for the shops reference for when they have to sell them by. (normally for eggs and longer life bread)
Use by dates are when you should use up by. (meat, milk and other fresh stuff)
Best before, are for longer life food that might be a bit stale after the date but should be edible.0 -
I've had mozarella weeks past it's date, in the fridge, and it's been fine. You can definitely tell by smelling mozarella whether it's OK or not.
If you want to use it up, make a tuna pasta bake & freeze it.
Sweat an onion
Add a tin of toms
Simmer to reduce a little
Add garlic
Add mozarella
Add tin of tuna
Add herbs (oregano works best)
Boil water, cook pasta, drain add to tomato mix, season.
You can freeze at this stage. To cook, defrost, top with parmesan and bake in the oven unitl piping hotWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
I used some yesterday that was past it's date & it was just fine
I sliced it & stuffed it into some split wholemeal pitas, added a little wafer thin smoked turkey, chopped peppers bottled in oil & a grinding of black pepper (all ingredients from Lidl) then I put them on my pre-heated George Foreman grill for 3 minutes (you could just do them under the normal grill too) delicious
like indiegirl I've frozen it complete in the pack & it's been fine for cooking/melting. so another endorsement for the freezer0
