Am reading conflicting advice. Some say to ignore the letters. Others to never accknowledge who lives where. So I'm not sure what is best to do.

Plus I'm panicing which doesn't help.

  • Hello all,

I too have received the dreaded Mackenzie Hall letter today. " we are attempting to contact the above named person regardinga personal matter" ( addressed to me but not my full name just initials ) We have been provided your address blah blah blah, call this number blah blah". Now i Havent had an outstanding debt for at least 7 years ( since i met my good lady )probably more, ive been on the electrol roll at all my addresses during this time, ive also been at this property for 5 years. I do not want to call these people due to the posts ive read before, it seems if they confirm where you live then they attempt to bully you into paying a barred debt they have no legal right to collect. Basically i would like some advice, shall i just ignore this letter and state " not known at this address " to all future letters or shall i contact them???? To be honest id rather not contact them, id loose my temper and go and meet these " people" face to face in Scotland and probably end up in Kilmarnock Police Station. Any advice would be excellent. Ive been debt free for a long time now and this letter is a kick in the teeth to all ive achieved. Also has anyone maybe contacted Watchdog, Rogue Traders or XRAY( only in sunny old Wales ) ?

If you receive a letter saying we are trying to locate X person then I would just ignore any such letter.

If you receive a letter addressed to you saying that you owe them £XXXX then I would send the prove it letter to them.

    I would never ring them.

Well we've just had the 'locate' letter. So I guess that means we ignore it for now. Although it'll be a while before I can settle.

As Tixy says, ignore the "trying to contact the above person about a personal matter" letter, it's them trying to get you to call them.

After a few weeks one of two things will happen:

    1. You'll receive a letter outlining what it is they are after.
    2. You'll never hear from them again.

If you receive the letter outlining what it is they want, you can decide what to do about it.

Sorry - should have clarified which letters you had received first. Didn't mean to confuse.

Its ok. I naturally panic myself about these sorts of things. Which I know is what they're after. I've checked my credit report and my partner's report. There is nothing on there at all for the past 10 years (that is outstanding or in arrears). So I guess I sit back.....ignore it...... and see what happens.

I just odd, frustrating and worrying.

To think we owe some money that we don't know about.

  • Thanks for your advice, im in the process of getting my Credit Report ( which is also proving awkward ) just to make sure. I shall be ignoring these people until the inevitable second letter. I will also contact them only by post. It doesnt matter how many times you tell yourself " they cant do this type of thing and get away woth it" it still stresses you out. Ive been reading up on this company and i just cant understand why the are still allowed a license to trade, they must have found a legal loophole to allow them to do this, i think our taxpayers money would be better served investigating things like this than flying Mr Hague around the world at 2 K a pop.

If they are harassing you for a debt that isn't yours, report them to the FOS.

I've just checked my Credit Report and it has a default on it put there by this Mackenzie Hall. I'd never heard of them until looking it up on this forum. It says it's for 'Mail Order' to the tune of around £750! I've never had anything mail order and I don't think I owe this debt. Are they allowed to put a default on my Credit Record without any attempt to contact me? Do I need to write to them asking for proof? I'm aware that this would be opening up the floodgates to grief if I do after reading these posts lol. Could really do with getting it off my credit file if at all possible. Any advice would be appreciated.
