Okay but don't bother with the OFT - the eight weeks start from the date received. Allow a couple of days beyond that then take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
  • Hi, I need some advice please!!! I have a credit card debt from about 3 years ago for £3,400 and have been stupid and havent paid anything and have moved twice and avoided it..anywayz, i have received 2 letters from Mackenzie Hall about this debt saying they have obtained this alternative address as a financial link supplied by a credit refernece agency. I want to pay the debt off but do these people take direct debt payments because what I have read about them is that they are a bunch of a**holes!! I haven't phoned them yet wanted some advice..as the debt is 3 years old I know I have to pay..any advice would be very much gratefully received before I ring them!!

Always communicate in writing. Do not give them a direct debit. If you must pay them by instalments use a standing order.

If MH now own the debt then they bought it for a pittance and you could make them a full & final settlement offer. Again, in writing.
  • thanks fb, will do..no-one will be knocking on my door though?? Don't want to happen they put a deadline on the letter..what do you think??

No-one from MH will call and the deadline means nothing.

Don't be harassed/threatened by this bunch.
  • This forum is so helpful, I myself had a letter on my doorstep this morning from mckenzie hall, I rang them quoting my ref no, I requested that they send me a copy of the orignal contract for which I signed, (which was over 6 years ago now) I haven't paid or been in contact with the origanal company for at least 5 years. When I requested the letter the guy on the phone said that he would post it, I hope he is bluffing, do they really have a copy of my orignal contract which I signed from such a long time ago??? The only way they could have it is if the orignal company whom I owed the money to have excellent admin teams?? So now it's just a case of waiting? If I do recieve a copy, I will then send the letter from which the helpful people have posted on this site, and then I'll see what happens. My question is, does anyone know if they would actually have a copy of the orginal document with my signature on. If they don't have this then they don't have a leg to stand on??

i'd put money on them not having it. the last time i got a letter from them i rang them and requested the copy. that was about 12 months ago now, and it still hasnt arrived.
  • thanks walshy walsh! fingers crossed! Before I found this site I was just going to ring them and confirm and pay up. Thank goodness there are ways around it. I know it was foolish to take the debt out in the first place, but we were all 18 once!! :)
