Could somebody help me please? I've decided to get a samsung RV510. There are very similar models available from Sainsburys and Amazon for the same price (£329)and I'm not sure which one is better? One has 3GB/350GB and the other has 3GB/500GB. I'm not sure if there is any other difference between them?

I don't ever need to take the laptop out with me and don't need it for games. My current laptop is five years old and so slow it is driving me crazy. I just need to use it for work/internet/emails.

I'd be really grateful if somebody could advise me, thanks in advance.

I'm not able to post a link!

Make and model of your old laptop?

    Presario V5000
Mobile and Sempron Processor - think it is single core?

I don't know anything about computers! I've been using CC Cleaner and advanced system care for months but the laptop is still really slow. The lid is about to come off the hinges too so I really think I need a new one!

    This one is £299. 2GB/500GB 2.3GHz CPU
    http://www.coopelectricalshop.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?ProductCode=SAM-COM-RV510A0B-BK&utm_source=google&utm_medium=basefeed

The Amazon one is 3GB/500GB 2.1GHz CPU

The Sainsburys one is 3GB/320GB 2.1GHz CPU

The Coop one is hence a good deal. 2GB memory should be enough but can be upgraded cheaply at a later time.

My head's going to burst soon, do I go for the Acer or a different brand lower spec??

It will be used of web, email, music etc but I'd like one that'll last really.

    Any advice at all??

A bit more RAM(£10 to £20, dependent on capacity) and a clean install would have done it.
But if you say it's beginning to fall apart, then perhaps you may not want to bother.

Thanks grumpycrab for having a look for me - it was really kind of you :)

Is the coop eletricals one better because it has a higher processor speed? I don't really understand RAM - would you upgrade to make your computer faster or do people upgrade for storage space?

The RAM is solid state memory that lies between the processor and the hard drive.
People upgrade their RAM when they want to run many programs at the same time or would like to run graphic intensive programs.

For general tasks, 2GB of RAM is adequate.

Slow machines can be fixed in half an hour with a few tweaks

Follow this and or post a hijackthis log in a new thread, along with your commit charge and installed ram figures from task manager/performance

ccleaner doesn't speed up computers, and I'd advise you to uninstall advanced system care and any security software and replace with avast 6 free version

look on ebay for a new hinge.

A bit off topic but a good priced 17"inch Dell here (£408). The warranty could be good. Don't know anything about the retailer though. http://www.ibood.com/uk/en/index.php?utm_source=wntni&utm_medium=dqb&utm_campaign=cj

EDIT: may not be brand new. Probably excess stock, "grade A"

Thanks Grumpycrab for your help and suggestions. While I have been asking on here my son found this one:

    Toshiba Satellite C660D-153

    4Gb memory and 640Gb hardrive

£341 at dixons. It seems good but is it?

    Thanks for your help.
