Unless you have specific requirements go for the best processor you can afford. The following site allows you to look up processor oomph... http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.phpI am looking for a laptop around the £300 mark...
Toshiba offer cheap warranty extensions (if you're worried about reliability). The £350 one from Argos has a 2 year warranty. http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?jspStoreDir=argos&catalogId=1500002701&referredURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.argos.co.uk%2Fwebapp%2Fwcs%2Fstores%2Fservlet%2FSearch%3FstoreId%3D10001&cmpid=COJUN&langId=-1&searchTerms=5084760&referrer=COJUN&storeId=10001&_%24ja=tsid%3A11674%7Cprd%3A1546795
This one's a bit nearer £300. http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/toshiba-satellite-c660-15-6-2gb-250gb-i3-370m-329-99-save-laptops/915567

I'm looking for a laptop I could plug my current non portable (non widescreen) monitor and keyboard...grumpycrab wrote: »Assuming VGA and USB respectively, you should be fine. Check the tech specs for VGA, just in case.
Still a bit unclear on this, are you saying I should check my current monitor is VGA? In wiki it says:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connectorOn laptop computers or other small devices, a mini-VGA port is sometimes used in place of the full-sized VGA connector.
So I might need to buy another cable? I doubt if these details are usually contained in the laptop specs, meaning you need to physically see it before purchasing which limits the bargains.0 -
Certainly check the monitor's connectors; if its an older one it'll almost certainly have VGA - and you will use its cable to connect to the laptop. Nearly all laptops have a "VGA port" and this will always be listed in the specs.I'm looking for a laptop I could plug my current non portable (non widescreen) monitor...

Ignore mini-VGA, that's a red-herring.0 -

EDIT: if its this, the processor is very slow -> http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/samsung-rv510-320gb-15-6-inch-laptop-299-99-argos/9264960 -
I need a laptop for Office, email, surfing, etc. Just had a look at this HP machine in my local PC World:
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/hp-g62-451sa-core-i3-laptop-with-3gb-memory-black-08722513-pdt.html
Horrible textured case, but I can live with that if it's a decent machine.
Is it a decent machine for the money?
