I am looking for a laptop around the £300 mark, I have had a look about online, but I am totally confused by the jargon. If possible would somebody please point me in the right direction, to get something decent.

Toshiba offer cheap warranty extensions (if you're worried about reliability). Still a bit unclear on this, are you saying I should check my current monitor is VGA? In wiki it says:

On laptop computers or other small devices, a mini-VGA port is sometimes used in place of the full-sized VGA connector.

So I might need to buy another cable? I doubt if these details are usually contained in the laptop specs, meaning you need to physically see it before purchasing which limits the bargains.

Certainly check the monitor's connectors; if its an older one it'll almost certainly have VGA - and you will use its cable to connect to the laptop. Nearly all laptops have a "VGA port" and this will always be listed in the specs.

Ignore mini-VGA, that's a red-herring.

I need a laptop for Office, email, surfing, etc. Just had a look at this HP machine in my local PC World:

Horrible textured case, but I can live with that if it's a decent machine.
