Hi... I'm sorry to trouble you all - but I think my brain is about to explode!

I've been searching and searching - why are there SOOOOO many different specs of laptop out there?... After reading this thread I really liked the sound of the Acer Aspire 5732 but am not sure if I can pick this up for up to or about £400 also there are some that are listed as Aspire 5732z or some other letter after the numbers and I'm getting really confused!

Would obviously, as I am sure we all would, like to get the best spec for my money... It's only for the kids - they are starting to need to do homework on it and would like to speak to there uncle via the webcam thing too...

Many many thanks for your advice.

That machine doesn't have a built-in webcam as far as I know. Strange that it has a webcam but no microphone. You'll have a buy a seperate one.

S'me again... Okay - thinking on... And thank you for your responses so far - very helpful - thank you!...

We need to get ourselves a new wireless router as ours is WAY slow so I'm guessing to 'future proof' ourselves a bit we'll need a laptop with this wireless 'n' thingy going for it... And we'd like to add a wireless printer in the future too... So are there any laptops out there within this kind of price range (approx £400) with a good processor (this i3 sounds good) and wireless 'n'. They need to have a seperate number pad thing on the side, but the web video thing isn't so important - just a plus I guess... and they won't really be watching films etc... So it's just really a good laptop for homework and good wireless routing and probably playing some games on Cartoon Network....

Sorry for being so 'needy'.... and thank you all for your intelligent and very helpful consideration...

    Jenni (still not very techie)....

I was wondering if any of you have any experience of buying refurbished laptops? I am after a laptop for my eldest and I'm tempted to buy a refurb from somewhere like argos ebay outlet or wherever.

    Thanks.

    Thanks.

Try having a look at some of the posts further back this thread, on the whole Argos ebay refurbs get the thumbs up.

It's generally assumed to be customers returning un-opened boxes.
    Refurbished Products
Refurbished products are all 100% OK! In fact, they represent amazing value for money, especially as we offer all our refurbished products with a full ONE YEAR warranty.
These products may be classed as refurbished for a number of reasons:
    • They may have been previously sold, and subsequently returned to one of our parent stores and not put back on sale for cosmetic packaging reasons. This is often as little as a broken seal.
    • Alternatively, they may simply have incurred a minor amount of cosmetic packaging damage during handling in the day to day running of our business.
    • Some items may also have been returned to our parentstores with a reported fault or where a customer had difficulty in using.
All of these products are returned to our certified testing facilities, examined and fully tested. Only products classified by our professional inspection and testing process as "A1 Condition", fully tested, working, and complete are then made available for sale through Argos Clearance Bargains. Any products that don't meet these high standards are never sold through our eBay shop or retail stores. All of our refurbished products are sold in there original manufacturers packaging unless stated on the listing. The fact that we guarantee the products for a full year means that you can purchase with full peace of mind. REMEMBER: WE CLEARLY STATE IN EVERY TITLE, SUBTITLE OR LISTING IF A SPECIFIC PRODUCT IS REFURBISHED. IF IT DOESN'T SAY REFURBISHED THEN IT'S ALWAYS BRAND NEW!
Or for the 2nd hand type refurbs try,

http://www.bestbuy.co.uk/product/1000147090/acer-aspire-5334-156-laptop---intel-celeron-320gb-2gb-memory.aspx looks to be a fair deal for under £300 (in theory with the VAT back from Quidco - so under 260!).

Yes, only 2GB RAM, but should be fine for general use (& memory can usualy be upgraded).

We've had good experience with Acer models, so would hope this should be fine :-)

    cheers
