I agree with you as regards to a good built in unit particularly if you are using it for business, my Blaupunkt TravelPilot E cost me nearly £500 + cd changer (which is a good idea as it saves taking out the map cd which cost around £100) but although I purchased it through a supposed to be reputable dealer, he isn't interested in the problems I have had with it since new. I'm sure the unit would be brilliant and it is when its working but all I'm offered is for it to be sent back to be repaired which leaves me without the sat/nav for several weeks and of course no radio for the traffic reports, any ideas?

    Hi Barry,

What problems have you been having with the unit, I have found that most issues are caused by a poor install or faulty GPS antenna, but if it is definitely a hardware problem I am afraid you are really left with no option but to send it away for repair, when I had my Carin & VDO system their warranty was that they would exchange the product (you hand over the faulty unit to the courier and he hands you the replacement) back-up and running the same day, might be worth checking if that option is available?

If anyone is interested Makro are selling a Medion Sat Nav system for £199.99 plus VAT, which is cheaper than the same one at Currys, which instore is £349.99, and the web price is £299.99. However, Makro by me (Halesowen) has sold out (no surprise there then!). I have no idea if this is a good Sat Nav system - but does anybody know if Currys price match??? May have to take a look in the local one!!!

I've just bought the European maps version from Makro Leicester for just under £300 including the VAT. I could have saved a bit by buying an attachment for my palm PDA, but the all in one unit is so easy and convenient, I reckon it's money well spent. The unit is about the same size as a PDA, but doesn't do anything other than GPS. It's a Navigon unit that uses Navteq map software, and it is absolutely brilliant! It will pick up a signal even in my shirt pocket, which I thought was impossible. You can then just listen to the very clear voice instructions. It will direct you right down to individual house numbers with pin point accuracy. It has mounting kits for car and cycle, but the car one is a bit clumsy, with a big suction pad for the windscreen. It works fine just sitting on the centre console though.
I'm a gadget freak, and I would say this is one of the best I've ever bought. Makro Coventry were sold out, and they told me a different one was coming in this week. Leicester still had a few of both the UK and European ones left.

  • I am looking for basic sat nav to get me from A to B. One that talks to you and tells you where to go. I dont want anything fancy or too complicated but after reading ALL of the messages left here I'm tottally confused as to what I should get. Also the messages seem to be old ones, so does anyone have any up-to-date info on a basic sat nav. Priced at no more than £300. This is the first time I've ever written. PLEASE HELP. Many Thanks

I bought the Tom-Tom unit (not the PDA version) for £365 duty free from Heathrow Airport which I thought was very reasonable. It doesn't matter where you're flying to to get that price. Top item too!
  • Do you sense the price is com9ing down

Duty free? It is only duty free if you are not a resident of the EU (hence you don't pay the VAT of 17.5%). Otherwise the 'duty free' term is just a sales ploy to get you to buy there.....

If you believe that it was duty free (i.e. it had VAT off, then you would have paid approx £442 inc VAT which is not a good price at all) - just my tuppence worth.....

Navman PIN at Maplin for £299 (b grade), looks to be a good £50 cheaper than elsewhere with the backup of a reputable retailer. To quote maplin re b-grade,

"If an item is "B grade" this means the product has been returned as it was unsuitable but it still carries a full gaurantee and is in working order. These products come in daily but sell out fast, so for a real bargain read on"

If I had a fairy godmother I'd be asking her so nicely..
