I tried to deal with dabs some time ago and found them most offhand and unhelpful - and I'm not the only one! I was going to place an order for nearly £1000 with them, but due to their attitude, I went elsewhere (and got the same stuff cheaper!!)
I will never place an order with them. >:(
I bought a Tom Tom Go from Amazon - OK, I paid full whack for it but it is such a super system that I don't mind.
  • Hi All
this is my first post - hope its useful

Currys have the TomTom Go at £399 on their web site and if you use this promo code AFF35OFF you can get an extra £35 off !
    so £364 total - bargain !

Its only available for purchases over £350.

    Cheers

  • Will TOM TOM work on my P900?

TOM TOM Mobile is not currently avaliable for the P900 and there is no planned relaease date for it yet. You can sign up for notification when it does become avalaible at the TOM TOM website.

Another option, which I haven't tried, but apparently works with all Bluetooth phones and PDA's would be the Parrot Car Kit CK3300. This also doubles as a handsfree car kit (so you get to gadgets for the price of one!!)

On the downside this is not a mobile system and would be fixed in one vehicle, but on the upside you could change your phone as many times as you like as long as it is bluetooth enabled.

http://www.driveblue.com/(nd0p1w550ihpb255t11unmbv)/Default.aspx?root=ck3300 you can get more information at Parrots website

A big plus is that it is substantially cheaper than some other systems out there. The cheapest price i have found where it is in stock is £189.95 at http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/3357.htm

Like I say i have never seen this system in operation, so can not assess how good it is - but if anybody has please let me know as I am thinking of purchasing this as a little Christmas present to myself
  • Hi, There is a voucher in Thursdays Mirror for the TomTom navigator at £399:99 from PC World. You are supposed to take the voucher in but I have managed without before, the voucher number is 203018.
I use the Medion PDA and it's great. regards, Kev :)

    Hi guys,

Although the TomToms and others are very good for under the £500 ticket, I myself splashed out on a full blown pioneer system, that has full post code navigation UK/Europe, touch screen TV, DVD, Radio and TMC (all major routes). Although it cost £1200 I consider it money worth spent, in fact I would say on a business side of things it has already paid for itself (time wise).

It is 100% more accurate that the TomToms and clones (I would expect it to be at 3 x the price) one of the advantages is that it is linked to the speedo so it knows exactly what speed you are doing and cross references that with the map and GPS data, which means it is accurate to within 3 meters, where as the TomToms and others are dependant on just the GPS signal, once you are in a built-up area or its very cloudy the TomTom's can struggle to pick-up the GPS signals thus it will give sporadic information or loose track of where you actually are on the maps.

Should the US Military decide to off-set the GPS once again then your TomToms are useless until you receive a software update  to correct the off-set. So if you are thinking of buying one of the TomTom for business rather than recreational reasons, i would highly recommend that you invest a little more money in a purpose built Car Navigation product like Pioneer/VDO/Blaupunkt/or others, its less of a headache and a far superior product as a whole.

But for recreational use, you could not go wrong with a TomTom or its variant.

  • I have a Palm V PDA. Is there reasonably priced GPS kit available for it, or would I be better off buying a new PDA and GPS?
  • Dave

I can buy 4 Tomtom Go's for £1200 and I doubt that they are 4 times less accurate than your system, and it must be the most popular system on the market so the software designers probably have a larger budget than high end system due to market mass, so software revisions are going to be frequent and take account of customer comments. Its portable so can move cars with me, and easily removed from cars to deter theft - something a permanent system cant do.

Say you park in London and have to walk to your final destination, how do you take your system with you? Tomtom Go has a 4 hour battery. The Trafficmaster system would be a boon though I admit, but you probably have to pay a subscription for that and I tend to know where the traffic is going to be heavy ie M25 at most times! My Tomtom works through the aremithic windscreen no problem on my Range Rover and does not suffer from any gps loss, although it can take a minute to warm up. The interia sensor works in tunnels as well.

My verdict - dont bother with pda bluetooth gps Tomtom kit too fiddly and tricky to get up and running, I tried a Navman IC510 and its not good. Daves kit sounds good to me but I like the portability and at £346 after discounts Tomtom Go is a cracking piece of kit.

Note - if any Tomtom 3 users would like updated maps which come with the TTG just drop me a line, M6 toll finally included.

Dont know if there is a link to here already but it is great.I got the Aldi package, and does exactly what you want it to ..i.e get you to the right place, minimum fuss. They have a good forum on there too.
  • Hi abomb1969, Where did you get tomtom go for £346? or did you mean £364?

    Cheers!
  • Cool thanks to someone earlier I just got the Mitac Mio 168 (PDA w/ Windows Pocket 2003 + integrated GPS antenna) for around 220 pounds from Novatech, a 256mb lexar 32x speed SecureDigital memory card for 20 pounds (from the USA on eBay), and a few DVDs with GPS + other software and various maps for a tenner.

Was considering tomtom go but at over a hundred pounds less and considering I'd quite like a PDA, I decided on this solution.
