Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
I am tending to agree with you dave regarding the installation of a proper gps system. i bought the tom tom go for 365 quid from currys. good service delivery etc. the package was good. but the tom tom go could not find the gps signal. from time to time it would sporadically find it, but lose it again. i am living in richmond greater london and i expect it to work well in this area. my car windscreen is fine and anyway it does not work outside the car either. So i did a quick search on the internet and found that there were other people also complaining about the same time.

    http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/review.php?reviewId=478

As per instructions, i returned it to a curry store only to be met by a boorish and patronising manager who told me that he would never buy anything online, if he did not know much about it. i told him that i knew plenty about the tom tom but it just does not work. he kept repeating what he was saying. i told him that i got it 35 quid cheaper than in his store and would he actually demonstrate that the tom tom go in his store worked properly. he said they did not open boxes. so i tried to explain the that it would have made no difference where i bought it as i would have had to return it in either case, but this guy was a special case. my hubby told me to calm down as our refund was being processed.

does anyone have experience of using a gps system successfully in the surrey/london area.

dave can you tell me where you got yours installed and how much did it cost.
  • The one Aldi sold a while back for 250 must have been really cheap - considering the other prices above
  • Hi All,

You can buy the TOM TOM Go at Eurotunnel Dixons tax free for £350.

Unfortunately I'd already bought mine from Amazon for £412.

However I have to say its an excellent piece of kit. Just got back for a week at Center Parcs in Belgium. I had downloaded POI's (Points of Interest) from PocketGPS for Center PArcs in Belgium, the TTG took me right upto the barrier with no mistakes.

It even saved me some money on the way home. We were on the A1 and wanted a meal, got the TTG to plot to the nearest supermarket and had lunch for all 5 of of us for £22 instead of the £45 it cost on the way out at Little Chef. (We didn't have a choice that time as we were stuck in a traffic jam for two hours due to a closure on the A1.

All in all a good result.

    Regards

  • I agree with you as regards to a good built in unit particularly if you are using it for business, my Blaupunkt TravelPilot E cost me nearly £500 + cd changer (which is a good idea as it saves taking out the map cd which cost around £100) but although I purchased it through a supposed to be reputable dealer, he isn't interested in the problems I have had with it since new. I'm sure the unit would be brilliant and it is when its working but all I'm offered is for it to be sent back to be repaired which leaves me without the sat/nav for several weeks and of course no radio for the traffic reports, any ideas?
    Hi guys,

Although the TomToms and others are very good for under the £500 ticket, I myself splashed out on a full blown pioneer system, that has full post code navigation UK/Europe, touch screen TV, DVD, Radio and TMC (all major routes). Although it cost £1200 I consider it money worth spent, in fact I would say on a business side of things it has already paid for itself (time wise).

It is 100% more accurate that the TomToms and clones (I would expect it to be at 3 x the price) one of the advantages is that it is linked to the speedo so it knows exactly what speed you are doing and cross references that with the map and GPS data, which means it is accurate to within 3 meters, where as the TomToms and others are dependant on just the GPS signal, once you are in a built-up area or its very cloudy the TomTom's can struggle to pick-up the GPS signals thus it will give sporadic information or loose track of where you actually are on the maps.

Should the US Military decide to off-set the GPS once again then your TomToms are useless until you receive a software update  to correct the off-set. So if you are thinking of buying one of the TomTom for business rather than recreational reasons, i would highly recommend that you invest a little more money in a purpose built Car Navigation product like Pioneer/VDO/Blaupunkt/or others, its less of a headache and a far superior product as a whole.

But for recreational use, you could not go wrong with a TomTom or its variant.

I am sure as time goes by these and others will get cheaper as better systems come on the market.

They will definitely get cheaper I was lucky and found my first one (Philip's Carin) in a 2nd hand shop for only £250 (retail £2500) it was brand new never been used (bags were still heat sealed) thought "I have got to have one of those", sod it £250 if its a stolen one I would have recourse with the 2nd hand shop, registered it then waited for Mr Police officer to come knocking, never did :) best thing was about 6months later i got invited down to their HQ near Banbury for a customer evaluation day, 4 hrs listening to a German explain what was happening with the market, what they plan to offer, and any feed-back we could give on the use and accuracy of the units earned me £200 complements of Philip's for my time :)

Then VDO purchased the Nav side of Philip's and released the MS5000/MS6000...thought "I have got to have one of those" (MS6000 7" screen built into the radio) seen one advertised on the German ebay for £1200 with the TMC, 6 disk CD changer & TV modules (over £3000 retail) brilliant piece of kit (if a little too bulky with all the add-ons. Sold my Carin for £950 and purchased the MS6000. Around 9 months later I seen an advert for the Pioneer AVIC 900 system (touch screen and voice controlled) thought "I have got to have one of those" (starting to sound familiar to anyone :0 ) searched high and low could only find prices @£2800 and above +Vat then as luck would have it (German ebay again) one came available for £1200 + Vat I purchased it and sold the VDO system for £900.

The Pioneer AVIC 900 comes in 2 units the radio/CD/DVD player, with touch screen and voice activated control, the 2nd unit is the Navigation Computer with TMC I have added the TV module to it (but spilt a cup of tea on the dash forgot the TV module was under it, it got fried :() now looking for another TV module. so in fact everything I have now maybe cost me as much as a TomTom Go does so I have a big smile on my face all year round (until the next incarnation of navigation products get released then you've guessed it...I have got to have one of those :-[)

But again I can only give my experience of using some of the hand helds and portable units (evaluating new products don't cost nothing) when compared with accuracy and reliability the dedicated in car units win hands down, but then thats why you pay so much more for them and the extras that come with them like a 7" touch screen, Voice control, Built in TMC, Built in CD/DVD player, physically connected to your cars speedo, reversing camera input, DAB module input.

If anyone is considering a Navigation product that they need to be reliable and accurate in all conditions then go for the purpose built ones, If you are after a Navigation product that you only need assistance from A to B on a not too regular basis, or as a novelty to show your mates then the Tom Toms or the other variants will do just fine, they all do the job they are designed to do. Systems that cost £2500 3 years ago are now much better and a lot cheaper about £1500, and as you know you can always find a bargain on the net  ;D

I have used my systems nearly every day over the past 6 - 7 years and I would not be without one, if anyone has any questions or installation issues about Sat Nav I will try and help answer them.

    ps
Don't be fooled by dealers charging you anything from £300 - £600 to install a fitted Navigation System, if you can fit a radio in a car you can fit a Nav system the hardest part is finding out what wire in the car is what, or if you have a mechanical or electronic speedo all of this can be found either on-line or in a Haynes manual that costs what £20? I have fitted all my systems myself and never had a problem with any of them, even helped others fit theirs so long as they kept the tea's coming. ;)

Sorry for the long history :-[ :-[

  • If anyone is interested Makro are selling a Medion Sat Nav system for £199.99 plus VAT, which is cheaper than the same one at Currys, which instore is £349.99, and the web price is £299.99. However, Makro by me (Halesowen) has sold out (no surprise there then!). I have no idea if this is a good Sat Nav system - but does anybody know if Currys price match??? May have to take a look in the local one!!!
Any fool can pay full price!!
