Thankyou High Roller for that indepth information which I found to be more than interesting and have noted all you say. I will be contacting Aldi to see if they have any left. What you didn't say, and what I can't recall seeing in previous threads, is the cost of the one from Aldi. In a minute I will do a search to see the prices elsewhere. Thanks again. Island man

  • The one that was for sale in Aldi (and Toys R Us) is indeed the same machine as the Mitac Mio Digiwalker. Personally I opted to get one without GPS software, and get TomTom seperately, and have recently tried them both out - very impressive. TomTom did miss one roundabout (easily forgiveable, as it is a brand new one leading to a retail park) but other than that it was faultless. However, do bear that in mind - any GPS system is only as up-to-date as the software running on it - and the software isn't cheap! However, the TomTom software does have loads of plugins readily available - so far I have used the UK postcode plugin when I knew the name of an establishment, but not the road name (it took me right into the car park!) and the speed camera plugin - this was okay apart from the fact the voice warnings can override the verbal directions - not ideal if there is a speed camera right next to a junction you need to take.

But let's not turn this into a TomTom review - for those looking at satnav with built in aerial, I would highly recommend the Mitac unit (and Novatech sell it without GPS software so you can have your choice of program) - however, if you are not worried about having seperate antennas and wires draped all round the car, there are cheaper deals to be had. Personally, I quite like the idea of a built in unit - not only is it neater, but gives the option of using the GPS functions for hiking, sailing etc.
  • Does anyone know anything about the Typhoon system that Makro has on offer £239+VAT?
    Thanks

Thanks for continued input on this subject. I would like to purchase a sat/nav/system as a gift, and not being a driver I really need to be aware of every aspect of the equipment and what it does. It will ONLY be required for getting from A to B by road. It will need to be a simple plug and play device. One other thing, is it "attached" to the car and if so, is it left in the car when unattended, similar to car stereo's making it an attractive item for would-be thieves, or is it something that is "mobile" and you remove when you leave the car.

So, a basic model and price is what I'm after.

    >:(Don't get me started on TOMTOM Go. My Husband bought me one via Dabs for a great price..he says. It was great for about 4 days and then froze and would not work, so contacted Dabs and was told to return it and they would send it for repair, this could take 6 weeks they said. The thing started working so thinking it a temporary blip I decided to soldier on, well it worked for 3 weeks and then froze again. HO Ho guess what, now outside the 30 day return period so have to pay for the thing to be returned, plus they send it for repair so chances are I get the duff thing back. I wanted my money back...quoted the DTI sale of goods...no joy at all.. So a lesson here, never do business with anyone you cannot actually speak too, even typing this is putting my blood pressure up. I don't know what the TOMTOM people think of this but I wish I had bought the cheap one from Halfords, my friend did and his works fine.
I will add that another friend bought a TOMTOM and has had no problems with it, it's just the attitude of Dabs that gets me. Any ideas?

    Hi,
Maybe you would like to try the following link to eBey to swot-up on the Medion MD95000.I think it may give you a better understanding of this sat/nav..

    http://search.ebay.co.uk/medion-gps_W0QQsojsZ1QQfromZR40

I am not, however, advising you to bid on the items on auction as they are already above the initial selling price.

Thankyou for the info and recommendation to "look & learn" from ebay which I have done.

Overnight I've done a bit of reading and feel much wiser now and maybe ready to embark on a purchase.

The gift would be for our daughter as a surprise, but, as she is in H.M.Forces, is eligable for forces discount at many outlets. The decision now is, should I get a surprise gift or suggest she makes the purchase herself and me reimburse, decisions decisions !

    Great String - thanks everyone!

Just like Elise, I yesterday bought a TomTom Go from Currys at £377.99 with their new discount code AFF10PC, but by accessing Currys Web Site through the EGG site I also got a further 10% cash back, so I am quite chuffed!

I've fancied one of these gadgets for a long time, and am amazed how much the price has dropped over the last 18 months.
  • Hi, thanks for that info. I am a regular at Aldi's but haven't noticed this Nav system. Probably wouldn't have registered with me anyway as I don't drive. However my daughter does and she lives away and travels (and gets lost), so of late, I wondered about buying one of these things for her.

    1) your Aldi purchase,was it recent ?

    2) am I to assume it is a purchase/plug in/and play type of thing.

    3) she intends replacing her car after Christmas, daft question, but will that effect the system, or do they operate irrespective of the vehicle.

Being over 60 and a non driver and only recently mastered the basics of "puting", I am, as you might assume, somewhat "thick" over such matters.

In Southport they had them in the office, not on show. They produced one on request, so don't assume they are not in stock...ask first. Not managed to get mine up and running yet but it is meant to be plug and play and can be transferred to any vehicle including a bicycle without any adverse effects.
