I recently opened a cashcard account due to adverse credit history and was expecting online banking. Got my membership number emailed to me (which i thought was odd as i didnt supply my email address) and my passcode which i gingerly entered into the login page. Oh dear, it said i had entered it wrong 3 times and was locked out, strange as i had only entered it once. So i had a word with the cashier at my branch and she said that because i had "bad credit" i wouldnt be allowed it, although the internet banking team had sent me another passcode number. Is this right? It seems a bit unfair not to have internet banking, just because i have a ccj. There isnt anything really you can do online that doesnt require pre approval. Any thought would help.

You have been told the wrong thing, ask to log it as a complaint in the branch so that the cashier gets some feedback.
I'm not sure why you'd have trouble logging in, and why you're on a passcode system. If you took the Visa Debit card option, you should be on PINsentry for online banking. What would William Shatner do?0 -

Hi there,
I managed to sort it out, seems that i entered the 1st number 5 as a 6 (its easy to do with those horrible scratch off things) so it's resolved and alas i now have internet banking.
Whilst im on the subject, i also have another query you may be able to help with. I recently paid in a cheque of £150 on Monday and a direct deposit of cash today of £150, with my account being at £0. I understand that the cheque takes time to clear. The strange thing is, i have a balance of £148.20 (two deposits from paypal total of 0.20 for verification, have been made). £2 has dissapeared. I spoke to a very unhelpful customer service assistant telling me that two transactions had been made, both on 28th jan for £1 each.
I explained that i had just opened the account and have not used it for any transactions other than on the 28th Jan to withdraw £100 leaving my account at £0 and the two deposits i mentioned earlier. He said to wait and see what comes up. Now, im not really bothered about £2 but im worried that at the time my account was showing minus £2 therefore putting me into an un-authorised overdraft (which i thought wasn't possible on this account) and leaving me with charges for something i havn't done! Also, could someone have my details? I find it odd that two transactions of £1 were made within half an hour of each other.
Phew!
Do you have any ideas?
Thanks.0 -

I would say we're 50/50 when it comes to an "internal" score and an external score. If we relied too much on account performance, we could effectively be deceived into trusting someone while every other bank on the high street is chasing them for money.
So can you tell us, for clarification purposes only, what the floor limit is or is that individual to each account holder? For example, if you have a full blown debit card I assume you mean that if the limit was 50 then anything you bought under 50 would be instantly authorised? How come when I thought that chip and pin basically meant everything gets authorised regardless of floor limits? Some say he is a racist, others say he is a liar but the truth will always prevail...

Have you made any purchases using the card? When I use my card it usually shadows a 1 pound authorisation and then the whole amount is authorised (not debited but showing as less than actual balance) at the end of that night, i.e. 03.00am.
Maybe you've spent twice on the card, or have PayPal taken a pound from you which is usual if you set up a direct debit for instance? When they credit you the 2 small amounts this is only to verify you right? When you set up the direct debit they used to debit a pound or maybe even when you register a new card they debit the pound. Unsure now but worth a thought....Some say he is a racist, others say he is a liar but the truth will always prevail...

If you have and use a debit card on the account, get used to seeing your balances out by the odd £1 - it's where retailers "test" the card with a small transaction to make sure it all works. They never take the funds, but it effectively blocks you from spending that money twice, so it comes off your available balance. In your case, I guess it would be Paypal?
Also, charges and interest are based off your statement balance on any given day - you'll never be charged until the money has actually left your account, even though your available balance can be massively in the red, as above.
It can be quite annoying - I stayed in a hotel in London last week because I didn't fancy the commute home because of early meetings and blah blah. They authorized £1500 on my card for my stay, which made my available balance look terrible for a week. What would William Shatner do?0 -

Floor limits are set by retailers, and more and more are authorizing straight away now, that I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually disappears. Someone I work with commented that you could tell when Woolworths started going down the pan by when they removed their floor limits. To my understanding, however, it's never usually higher than the highest cheque guarantee - £250.
And Chip & PIN doesn't authorize every transaction, no - every transaction should be authenticated by the Chip & PIN, though. What would William Shatner do?0
