It would appear I have some odd hybrid cash account / current account then.

I have an account that DOES have a cheque book and internet banking etc however my visa card doesn't have a cheque guarantee. Also my sort code is 20-25-25 (or something similar)

I opened my account online, never went into a branch.

Exactly what account and card do I have!?!?!?

You can have a bank account with a cheque book but without a cheque guarantee card - you likely scored high enough for a regular account, but not high enough for a cheque guarantee card as well.

If I recall right, sorting code 20-25-25 is reserved for new-to-bank accounts opened online or with telephone banking. I may be wrong, though.

I am not sure on sort code 20-70-70. It might be a branch sort code, as opposed to a service centre sort code. Sutton111, did you open your account in a branch?

The "official" ruling on cash card accounts is that the seller should give the customer a cash card leaflet and ask them to fill it out and return it. They then get sent off to a central team for processing, leaving the seller with more time to sell revenue generating products (this is an issue of contention in Barclays - sellers are not paid for opening Cash Card account, but they are paid for opening youth products, which make the bank less money).

However, many sellers will just open them in branch. Often, if the customer is declined for a Barclays Bank Account (the "standard" account that all other fee paying accounts etc. are based around), it's easier to just open a Cash Card there - since you'd already done the ID and data capture, etc.

That probably makes sense, I have some historic adverse credit dating back to 2002/2003 which is begining to drop off.

I have been using basic bank accounts and sub prime credit cards etc until recently when I managed to qualify for a prime credit card and a full current account so perhaps my score isn't quite high enough yet to secure a cheque guarantee function.

On that basis, is my card then likely to be electronic?
  • For instance, cards starting 4659 are all Premier customers, 4539 are standard Visa Debit cards, etc.

I have a card starting 4659 but it is a normal connect card with cheque function.....

So I cant see how 4659 can only be premier customers...

Very likely to be the electronic version, yes. Go into a branch and ask - they should be able to tell you. Also, ask if you have the limits for a full debit card. If you do, then you can have one, straight away. Otherwise, you'd have to apply.

I may be wrong with the ranges, then. Or it may be a sub range (4659 2202). I'll do some delving and find out. :)

4659 is also the range of cards for staff accounts ;)
  • Not staff either :) 4659 0101 for me
  • Sorry to revive an old thread, but is it actually up to you if you get a debit card or cash card?

Is there a chance of being declined a debit card and getting a cash card on the cash account?

    Yes.

Neither are scored products: your credit history does not matter. They are "one and the same" in the application sense. It is entirely your choice.

  • Fantastic, thanks for your help.

And thanks for the speedy response!
