MOT failed Car Parts

Hi Guys

My car MOT failed today due to following reasons
  • Nearside Bonded suspension unit deteriorated and cannot function as intended [2.4.F.3]
  • Offside front tyre has a cut [4.1.c.1a]
  • Nearside rear tyre has ply or cords exposed [4.1.c.1b]
  • Nearside rear direction indicator incorrect colour
  • Offside rear direction indicort incorrect colour
  • Offside rear brake recording little or no effort [3.7.a.4a]
Garage has quoted me £475 parts and labour and I strongly feel they are over charging me. Can someone direct me to only car spare parts website where I can buy these parts and get them fitted by garage.

    £475 is a bit much.

2 tyres fully fitted = no more than £100 depending on brand. See sites like www.blackcircles.com

Shock absorber maybe around £60 fitted, but best to replace both on the same axle so allow £120.

Rear brakes no doubt need adjusting which would be no more than £30, but if they need shoes as well £60, add to that rear drums and bearings (if needed) £80. A garage will only really know what needs doing once the drums are off.

I have no idea what is causing the rear indicators to be the incorrect colour. Have you changed the light units? Are the light units damaged? Are the incorrect bulbs fitted (i.e. clear bulbs fitted to a clear unit instead of amber bulbs)? Bulbs no more than £5. Rear light units if needed £40 from a scrappie maybe, fitting £20 at most.

So I make that £420 at absolute worst case scenario - and I reckon I am overestimating.

I reckon £255 at most assuming you don't need new drums or light units including parts fitting and vat.

If you can give us the make/model of car we can probably help you out further.

Just need new 'orange' bulbs. After awhile the orange wears off - and if they show 'white', they are a failure. Couple of quid - sorted.

N/S bonded suspension unit ?? Is that the shock then? Never had this description come up before! Very inventive of VOSA or someone.... ;)

O/S/R brake - could be a handbrake cable.

    Tyres - obvious

And need orange bulbs - as said before.

Bonded suspension unit........... ummm - gotta laugh! :D:D:D

    Honda Civic Auto 1.4i 1998 - R reg.

Does Bonded Suspension Unit means changing complete suspension of shock absorbing?

Also do I need changing brake disc or drum?

-What are they referring to as "bonded suspension unit"? Maybe bushes. Talking a few tens for new bushes.
    -2 tyres around £110 fitted from Protyre/Blackcircles
-2 x indicator lens, few tens depending on what item it is, scrap yard fine

I make that around £210 so far.

Braking, could be new pads/shoes or slave cylinder.
    Call it £100 tops.

£310 so far. Add in labour, £460 wouldn't be out of order.
    Happy chappy

Nice to see another well maintained car :A
  • never heard of Bonded Suspension... ;-(
but I don't have a Honda.. Anything Suspension is usually replaced in pairs..

Offside rear brake recording little or no effort :- Could just need removing Cleaning up and putting back.. I had similar problem and when returned to the same Garage could not find a fault with it.. After I took it elsewhere to get it cleaned.... get it checked by someone else..

Tyres get them online as others have said,

Indicators :- Go the scrap yard or even Honda Garage Spares may be not too expensive.. DIY this one...

Brakes :- get them checked cleaned independantly first..

Suspension :- Bushes are cheap but the labour is not.. And Garages usually don't mess with bushes as it's to much messing. Just change the suspension out.. Pricey but no more than £200..

    N/S bonded suspension unit ??.........

    rubber bush?

with the rest, it depends so much on the car, tyres could cost between £30 & £150.
