I've been 'cooking' my pasta in a thermos for a while now. I use a wide neck one so its easier to clean, just bung in the pasta, pinch of salt, pour in boiling water and give it a quick stir, put the lid back on, then I leave it for 10mins - 12mins, depending on how al dente I want it for and drain! done. no fuel needed :D

never thought of adding cooked pasta to a pasta bake though, have always cooked it from dried :o silly me, been brainwashed by the instructions on those jars baked pasta sauce
  • very tasty but basic
cook pasta and drain and chopped cooked bacon add a tin of pineapple pieces including juice top with grated cheese pop in the oven for 30mins

    absolutely lush
  • Made another one tonight (thank you Mr Sainsbury's for the receipe!)
Cook pasta and steam broccoli. Chop up some sausages and cook in pan with onions. Add tin of chopped tomatoes (I whizz mine to smooth mix and add in mushrooms to thicken and get more nutrition hidden in there), add some tom puree. Once all cooked mix together and bake for 20 mins covered with mozzarella cheese (or any other type you fancy).

Simmer a chopped red onion in a large pan of salted water with 250g broccoli florets. After 10 minutes add 400g penne pasta and carry on cooking until the pasta is done.

Reserve 400ml of the stock and drain the rest. Put the pasta and veg into a serving dish and keep warm. Put the stock into a saucepan and add 2 teaspoons of bouillon powder (or use half a chicken stock cube), 1tsp french mustard and a 200g pot of creme fraiche. Whisk and turn on the heat until it starts to bubble. Add salt and pepper and half teaspoon dried thyme. Add 150g mature cheddar, grated and stir on the heat until melted. Pour this over the pasta and veg. Yum!

If you like the top crispy then keep 50g of the cheddar to mix with 4 tbsp white breadcrumbs and half a teaspoon of mixed herbs. Sprinkle this on top and grill for about 3 minutes.

    Nice one from Saturday kitchen:

    Cook penne or fussili pasta.
Make a white sauce and mix in cheese.
Put a third of the cheese sauce into the cooked pasta and mix through.
Place half the pasta in a dish, top with a bolognese type sauce (half) put rest of pasta on top, remaining bolognese sauce.
Mix 2 beaten eggs into the remaining sauce and cover the pasta/bolognese mix, then top with grated cheese. The egg in the topping sauce helps it to puff up and become firm.
Bake for 30 minutes in a hot oven (gas 6.)

Similar to lasagna but you can make this in any shape dish.
I have made a version where I have cooked onions and garlic, added 2 tins of plum toms, sliced mushrooms and broccoli (cooked for 3 mins).
Really yummy, filling and very cheap for a huge dish-full.
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!

Quick question (which will probably make me look stupid!) - but I want to use up leftover chicken tomorrow to make a pasta bake (as my kids love pasta!!) How do I make the sauce? Is it a tin of soup or do I do a white sauce????

Know I sound silly...but not done it before!

    Thanks for any help!

  • Never a silly question.......

I guess either of your suggestions would work, I'd possibly make a white sauce but put herbs in as well though a tin of (thickish) soup would be fine. Alternatively you could do a tomato based sauce.

    Enjoy.....

Well you can either make a tomato base (tin of chopped toms, onion fried off, pinch of herbs, grate in a spare carrot if you have one) or a white base (white sauce, mushroom and sweetcorn is nice) then just chop up the chicken and add it to the sauce.

I use a tin of Campbell's condensed soup, usually do a tuna pasta bake with the mushroom soup but if you have chicken I'd use the chicken one instead.
