If you happen to have an egg that needs using up you can mix that into the creme fraiche, either add cheese to that or sprinkle on top. It makes more of a set topping; when I make moussaka I use either creme fraiche or yoghurt, whichever's open, plus the egg, it all puffs up:)0

I use creme fraiche when I make homemade curry if you wanna try that and use it up that way.
In future, I make a bechmel sauce with cheddar and use that on pasta bakes. Like a lasagne. Yummy! What matters most is how well you walk through the fire0 -
Its a firm favourite in our house:
We call it savoury pasta bake.
Yields: 6 Servings
Ingredients
14.79 mililiters Olive oil
1 large Onion chopped
2 Cloves garlic crushed
500 grams Lean beef mince
78.07 mililiters Tomato paste
59.15 mililiters Red wine optional
236.59 mililiters Beef stock
3 medium Tomatoes chopped
1.23 mililiters Ground black pepper
29.57 mililiters basil chopped
14.79 mililiters Oregano chopped
473 mililiters Maccaroni
60 grams Butter
78 mililiters Plain flour
473 mililiters Milk
177 mililiters Cheese grated
118.29 mililiters Cream
59.15 mililiters Parmesan cheese shredded
1.23 mililiters Sweet paprika
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 180 C. Brush 20cm x 30cm x 6cm shallow oblong baking dish with melted butter or oil. Heat the oil in a large pan, add the onion and garlic, cook for 3 mins or until onion is tender. Add the beef mince and stir over a low heat until the meat is browned, breaking up any lumps of mince with a fork. Drain excess fat from the pan. 2. Add the tomato paste, wine, stock, tomatoes, pepper, basil and oregano. Simmer, uncovered, over a low heat for 45 mins or until sauce has reduced, stirring occasionally. Cook the macaroni in a large pan of boiling water until just tender. Drain and set aside. 3. Heat the butter in a large pan, add the flour. Stir over a low heat for about 1 min. Remove from the heat and gradually add the milk, whisking until smooth. Return to the heat and whisk until the sauce is thickened and smooth. Add the cheese and the cream, then combine cooked macaroni and cream sauce. 4.To assemble: Spread the base of dish with half the meat mixture. Top with half the macaroni mixture, then with remaining meat mixture. Spread top evenly with remaining macaroni mixture. Combine the extra tasty cheese, parmesan cheese and paprika, and sprinkle over the top. Bake for 25 mins or until golden brown. Do-Ahead: ====== The meat and macaroni mixture can be made up to 2 days in advance for this tasty dish. Store the mixtures separately, then assemble them and bake close to serving time.0 -

I really fancied making a pasta bake for my family and picked up a jar of Spicy Tomato & Pepperoni pasta bake sauce costing £1.60. Realising I would need two jars to feed my family so would mean spending £3.20 alone on sauces. I quickly put it back thinking I might be able to make a pasta bake sauce myself but don't know where to begin.
Does anyone have any pasta bake recipes? Ideally a spicy tomato and pepperoni one?0 -

i use tins of chopped tomatoes - much cheaper - then add your own favourite herbs etc.. check and stir occasionally, add some oxo / similar near the end to thicken if need be.Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

I add an onion to tomatos/passata, cook it and then reduce to a low heat whilst it thickens and then add cooked pasta to it. Last time I added pepperoni to the dish. Not totally sure what to tell you to add to make the tomatoes spicy. Could you look at the ingrediants on the jar you would have bought to give you an idea?
I grate cheese on the top of mine, that I have transferred from saucepan to dish and grill it till browned. Pasta bake is my staple dish when my DH works away as it's one pan cooking and uses store cupboard ingrediants.0
