I'M SORRY!! Before anyone else alters their plans for this evening, I was wrongly informed (by the lady in my local shop) that Strictly Come Dancing starts this evening. The Eurovision Dance Contest is on tonight but not Strictly. I have already pm'd a grovelling apology to Mummysaver who has cancelled her plans for tonight and I want to save the same mistake for anyone else. I AM VERY SORRY and I hope I am forgiven.

    Afternoon all

Troo- well done on the cards!

Sammyjig- huge :grouphug: for you and OH

Taplady- I'm so relieved for you!

Scuzz- have fun, I'm jealous :)

Mary43- happy for your mum, give her a huge but gentle hug from all of us!

    Welcome fluffybishop!

Hugest hugs to everyone else too!

Well, I've been out with one lot of Avon books, got soaked, came back, about to go out with a load more. I hope it's worth it . Then I'm carrying on spot carpet cleaning - out carpets were grotty even before we moved in. I'd tried stardrops on its own, and a freecycled steam cleaner on it's own, with no joy. The other day I tried a solution of stardrops/vinegar/water on the stain and then steam cleaning - it worked spectacularly! Once I've done all the proper stains, we're going to see about hiring one of those rug doctor things.

Other than that, today I'll be cooking some of the yellow-label steak for Dave as he's had a rubbish week back at work and I totally medicate people with food! I also need to check on the homebrew and make more draught-excluder sausages.

Oh, and the results came back from environmental health - it wasn't a rat's foot Dave's mother found, it was a twig! :rotfl: Of course, the evil woman is gutted now, because she was hoping to get a load of compensation and to get into a newspaper . Oh, am I ever glad that she lives far away from me.

    Anyway, love to all!

    Afternoon all,

Sammy...phone hospital and kick up and tell OH to use all his strength to moan...they will get fed up enough to do something quickly...he really shouldn't be left in pain without seeing somebody.

DS1 and DDIL1 on way home from Amsterdam...somewhere in England at present, had a text around 9am to say that their ferry has been cancelled and that they were trying to get to Holyhead in the hope of getting an earlier one...several Irish ports served from Holyhead but not sure how he comes, think that it takes 5 hours or more from Dover, they had seen no rain when I got text but were expecting Wales to be bad...little one asked this morning if to-day was Saturday, when confirmed she said 'Mammy and Daddy will be here later on'....she's 3 and a half, thought that they were older than that before they knew the days of the week, but she continues to amaze me at all turns.

Kitchen man is here to-day so not sure what the programme for dinner will be...had to drill hole in outside wall of kitchen for extractor fan outlet and he reckons that there must have been iron in the wall it took so long to drill the hole...kitchen is full of dust, unless he leaves around 1-2 it will be too late to cook...think fish and chips from chipper might be dinner...never realised how much I used oven until it was gone....DDIL2 has invited us down but she works all week and has enough to do at weekend without feeding us as well.

Hugs to all in need or want and congratulations to those who are celebrating.

Redruby, glad you are feeling a bit better, thank you - I'm definitely learning fast - although a bit perplexed about all the million types of screws.... (which ones for plasterboard or doesn't it matter????)

    quote]

Squiggly for plasterboard you will need some of these, but he said when you put the plastic raw plug thingie in, (see how tecnical I am :D ) do not screw it in too hard, just as much as it wants to go, when you put the screw in it will tighten the raw plug up. He did say if you have bricks behind the plaster board that you would be better off going into them as well, but you will need a masonary drill for this. . Sorry if you are even more confused xx :D

Sorry link did not work, you need fischer 37mm nylon drill fixing, for plaster boards xx Link works now, its the 37mm ones you need x

    Afternoon peeps

I slept in this morning, i thought that i`d set the clock for 0830 but i hadn`t moved the little slider across to turn it on :o i woke at 0928 and wondered where i was - still i must have needed to catch up on my sleep as it was almost 2am before i managed to get to bed.

The weather was dismal when i first woke but the rain seems to have stopped for a while so i sneaked out for a walk with the houndies, the washing has been hung around the house on various radiators but i doubt that it will dry as they`re not going to be switched on :D there are 2 airers in the garage that we haven`t used since we moved to this house so when i get chance i shall hunt one out and clean it to use. There were no rads in the last house but we had warm air ducted heating and it was great, just stand an airer in front of it for an hour and everything was dry. We do have a td parked in a spare room upstairs and if i really really need to i`ll take the heaviest clothes and put them in for a while to start them off drying and hang them up afterwards to finish off, if i do that though it will be in the early hours to take advantage of the economy 7.
Our electricity usage seems to climb when we have the television on and i`ve had a look at the booklet but nowhere does it say how much juice it uses

I need to have a quick clean in the kitchen and then i`m off to w*rk again so hopefully i`ll catch up with you guys later.

Sammyjig - ((((HUGS)))) for you and your OH, i hope that he sees a doctor soon and is better quickly.

Squiggly - for plasterboard the screws don`t really seem to make any difference but the type of fixings do, there are quite a few different ones but the ones that i found very good were these http://www.screwfix.com/prods/17481/Fixings/Cavity-Fixings/Nylon-Easi-Drivers-Pack-of-100 they will take a lot of weight and are very easy to use, instead of drilling a hole for them i put a flat screwdriver into one end and put them in the wall that way.

    Catch up later guys.

    Europe tips
As someone who travels from time to time!:o I thought I would pass on to you kind folks the best ways I have found, most of them agree with Martin's tbh. Foreign Currency - Get a Nationwide current acount and put some money in it before you go, and then get it out via a cash machine. I find this a better rate than any travel agent or even transferring in advance. No charges either, the same for the Nationwide credit card too. Phones, the cheapest way to phone home is to buy a local telephone card that offers cheap calls to overseas nos. We have one at 6€ and last us ages. Downside is that it will have run out before you get back, so use it up or pass it on. If you are desperate for a mobile, and yours won't work, look in a Supermarket and get a sim (I got the Carrefour one) with almost as much credit as on it as it cost. You will need to make sure your phone is unlocked before you go. Hope this helps.

Only just over two weeks and I will be setting off back to the warmer climbs!:D

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?
  • Redruby & SunnyDay, thank you :) I have been given a handful of metal wallplugs (similar to the plastic ones you linked to SD), and have a few grey plastic ones that expand (that I am just using for things like coathooks). I know what to stock up on when I next go DIY shopping now :T

I can successfully drill the right size hole in the wall (with my new cordless drill/screwdriver) too. But I was standing in Homebase looking (gormlessly  ) at the hundreds & hundreds of packs of different types of screws yesterday, and then found a box of assorted ones for £2.99 so got that...!!! I'm trying not to run before I can walk as the only thing I've ever been able to do in the way of DIY is put flatpack together. Later I'm getting some twinslot uprights & brackets so I can create a study area for youngest DD. My mate is coming round with her jigsaw (not brave enough to use them myself yet!!) tomorrow to help cut the melamine planks to size. But I am feeling a bit smug as I never thought I'd be capable of having a go at these sorts of things (not without them turning into a complete disaster anyway).

Anyway, before I was interrupted earlier I was going to hunt down some easy cookie recipes like the supermarket giant ones. My DD's tend to buy the big cookies at school - but they're 80p each there  But they are really keen to get making some instead (can you freeze them once they're cooked?), so we can save some money (ie they can get more at lunchtime if they're not buying cookies...) They're getting the idea of Oldstyle & money-saving now...:T

Scuzz, have a great holiday too!!!! Time to do more thinking about life..?!
Elona, I have a log cabin in my garden - it's lovely (a FinnForest one). Just waiting for the rain to stop long enough so that I can paint it with wood preservative. I also want to insulate & line the inside with plasterboard & run electrics out so that it becomes more of a proper room. Not that it isn't now, but even more so.
PenPin, glad to hear you are feeling a bit more with it. Sorry about your poor friend's situation though :(
Sammyjig, hope your OH is a bit better this afternoon - don't be afraid to pester!!!
Mary43, I'm glad your visit to your Mum was a positive one & that the staff made an effort to make her birthday special. That's lovely of them.

Anyway, youngest two just gone out with their father unexpectedly for a little while, so all quite here briefly. Time for a cuppa & a biccy I think :)

I can successfully drill the right size hole in the wall (with my new cordless drill/screwdriver) too.

Wish I could squiggly! The drill always 'jumps about' in my hand when I try to drill anything! The greatest discovery I ever made was chipboard screws - you can screw them straight into pretty much anything except metal and masonry, and they're surprisingly strong! Great for attaching hooks and spice racks to the back of doors, and for fixing drawers and the like. I have been waiting for Dave to put some curtain rails, speaker brackets and shelves up for over FOUR YEARS now, and I'm trying to pluck up the courage to use the drill again. I think if I messed it up it might spur him into action :rotfl: but I don't want to make a big ugly mess, and I hate thinking that I can't do these things. So, all you DIYers out there, how do I stop the drill from taking on a life of its own?!
  • Hi again all!

Just wanted to call in to say I allowed the OH to sleep til gone 1300 (he didn't get in til gone 0400 last night) and then went in and woke him with my medley from 'My Fair Lady'.. I think it was the high note in 'I could have danced all night' that finally woke him...

Well... I was hungry and awake and the cat and I were fed up waiting to be fed...:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: ..... course Treacle was already doing her bit by sitting on his chest, purring at full tilt and dribbling attractively all over him. (Now she is old she tends to have a bit of a dribbling problem when purring!!)

Hope you are all having a good day, I am off to prep our meal while the OH showers and gets ready to cook and for his gig tonight.

    hugs to all

    Diva. x
