I was wondering about that too but read back through the thread and someone mentioned he was opposite the Co-Op. Haven't been down there yet but will give him a try next week.

    Yeah opposite the small co-op.

As you drive from Hove towards Portslade it's on the left hand side of Portland Road on a corner just about opposite the small Co-op on the right hand side (I park up beside co-op sometimes -but it's all meters). It's before the tower on the right hand side.

His shop has a wooden hut bit extending out the side (if you look down the side road that it's on the corner of, you can see the wooden extension bit (containing lots more veg ;) - I missed all that bit the first time). He usually has tables outside with veg in bowls or plastic tubs and he deals in cash ;)

Next time I go, I'll make a note of the side road he's on the corner of ;) but it might be Westbourne Gdns which would make it the corner of the second side road on the left of Portland road (heading from Hove to Portslade).

Was in Aldi in Portslade yesterday and there was a poster up saying the London Rd shop was opening in March - think it was the 9th. Should have paid more attention, sorry.
Good that a major store is opening in London Road, should be a real boost.

Now we need something up towards the old Woolies & Co-Op.

They need to relax the parking restrictions to get more people shopping there.

There's pound stretcher and maplins - what more do you want ;)

I remember the days of WHSmith and M&S in london road - near where Iceland is now. With that and Coop, woolies and a shoe shop - possibly Stead and Simpson, we only went to Churchill square if we couldn't find things in London Road

But then again, Churchill square was a large pile of concrete with a badly lit underground car park and a Tesco!

I am in the Hangleton area of Hove and can't recall the last time I went to London Rd, though it's probably about 5 years ago and that was because I was going to Richer Sounds. When I first moved here 17 years ago I shopped in London Rd regularly, mainly went there for the market and the weigh and pay shop which used to be there but with Woolies, Peacocks and Poundstretcher there too it used to quite a good shopping area. Might pop over sometime and see just how much it has changed.
  • Rioja the open market makes the trip worthwhile I find as the eggs are free range and cheap, good deals on bacon, fish, there's the Pulse place too I guess. Now with the ALDI, that should help get some more footfall in the area...

  • Wow! I still remember it in the 80's, when you could walk through WHSmith and end up in the 'square' at the back with the benches... I was 11 - scary!

I was wondering whether anyone fancies a meet-up in March? You know, same stuff we do here but perhaps involving alcohol, passing round of general knowledge, generally a mini-community spirit that could grow?

I have to drop my daughter at city college twice a week so maybe next Wednesday I will stay in the area and explore the market etc, rather than coming home then back there again 3 hours later to pick her up. Thanks EL

Oh and as for meeting up - where there is alcohol involved I can always be tempted :rotfl: Just wondered if any on here were the ones I spoke to at the Slug & Lettuce taster evening? One woman said she loved the site but not sure if she was a member or not.
  • Hi Rioja,

Well I'm all for alcohol! Sadly wasn't at the Slug & Lettuce that time but happy to meet in Hove?

Open market opens from around 9ish to say 17:30 so you should be fine, definately check out the Bacon stall inside as they also do eggs, plus the grocers at the front. The Thai store is fab for soy sauce and sweet chilli in large bottles at great value compared to supermarkets.

Went to veggie man today on Portland road and got lots of goodies, huge root of ginger is one of the items for £1! Lasts months in a drawer, Thai stirfrys here we come ;o)
