Lidl used to be great value.
I popped in,noticed they were charging
£2.45 for 100 A4 plastic pockets.
I thought to myself that seems expensive, good old Woolies would do better than that.
I was in Somerfield, noticed they were doing them for £1.49 !
Maybe Lidl's prices have gone up a lot with change in in exchange rate & fall in Pound.
I think lot of Lid's stuff is imported.
Any comments on Lidl's value for money these days ?
Ps: Their Baked Beans are now 29p a tin, blimey !0 -
Haven't been there in ages but I suspect other supermarkets can now come close to competing as Tesco for example have now launched their own ranges that itn't Value and isn't their own brand, I forget the names. But it's basically all the standard stuff you'd need like juice, milk etc and quite good prices. They don't want to lose out to LIDL etc. Right now it'd take an hour of my time to go to a LIDL, so by the time I factor that in, Tesco or Sainsburys works out better for me personally...
However the new ALDI on London road when it finally opens may change that!MFW #185

Aldi prices have crept up over the last year too. Lidl/Aldi are still cheaper for ham/cheese (if you don't usually buy the basic/value type stuff). They do a no added water wafter thin ham which is very nice, not slimey and cheaper than other wafer thin options.
Also the gammon steaks, gammon joints are cheaper. Biscuits are a good variety at cheap prices (again creeping upwards though - still nicer than the value/basic ranges).
Lidl jar of sun dried tomatoes are £1.19 which is cheaper than the ones I saw in Tesco and Sainsbugs.
D/w tablets are a good price still compared to "brand" names
Other stuff pricewise seems hit and miss.
I only go there for some bits (mentioned above) and for a bit of variety in our food
Plus the kids like Lidl's chocolate pillow cereal so I get that every now and then as a treat.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
I remember at ALDI the red and / or green pesto pots being quite good at £0.99p and the parmesan also being good plus their pomegranate juice was less and still very nice. Will have to see when they open...MFW #185

I wen to Lidl with brother, some interesting stuf there actually..
doubt i'll make it a regular thing, as bus fare would wipe out most of any savings ona small shop, and i have a reputation to maintain!Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

went past the book shop near bottom of Queens Road today, had a sign offering 'fill a bag for £10' - this side only'
no idea how big the bag is, or indeed the size of books, but you might get something interesting!Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

Thanks Brightonman!
I must say I need to clear some clutter rather than buy more, I am terrible with books. I heard today that charity shops are booming in terms of customers, but running out of goods as people are hanging onto things for longer now rather than giving them away.
Any more news on the ALDI on London Road? Also wondered what the plans are for the open market...MFW #185
