  • My initial email from energyhelpline.com said (at the bottom in small writing):

'Any special offers will be redeemed / paid once your switch has gone live with your new supplier.'

My confirmation of electricity supplier change email from ScottishPower arrived on 21/6 so i had better give them a call.

My gas switch is ongoing, but i used saveonyourbills.co.uk for that. We shall see.

    thanks.

My problem first started when I decided to change suppliers, currently I am with Scot.Power for electricity & Brit.Gas for gas. I used the EnergyHelpline to swith to SP online dual fuel, after reading more information & trying out different sites, inputting more realistic values of usage it became clear PowerGen would be my best option. I rang SP about an hour after signing up saying I wanted to cancel, they said as yet they hadn't received any details but connected me to somebody to give me more info. The guy I spoke to basically told me my figures were wrong & SP was cheaper than PG, so I said I would check further before I did anything else.
After checking every web site I could find PG was better by £30 to £70, so I rang the EnergyHelpline & cancelled the SP switch. On the Mon. I rang again to check & they said it was cancelled & they hadn't yet sent any details to SP. They told me that details are held for the 7 day cooling off before sending to the supplier anyway. Tues. I get an email welcoming me to SP ??? so I emailled SP & EngHelp saying to cancel SP switch, I also rang both & told them I had cancelled. Cancelled again asked them to send confirmation & was told they don't do that. Wed. recieved letter & welcome pack from SP ??? ??? rang again & girl I spoke to said I had signed up to SP on Mon 11/10/04 ??? ??? ??? all my calls to SP except the first one (9/10/04) when I discussed the costs were to cancel, she told me it was still on the system & she would remove it, maybe at last it will be cancelled ::) I will ring again to check if it is BTW if you ring SP use their freephone Nº 0800 027 0055. Most companies have freephone Nº's until you are a customer then it's local or national rate, I always use the freephone & get them to connect me or call me back. ;)

Well I've just tried to "calculate bill" again and I tried and tried and I was patient and it just doesn't work.

I think that the time has come to go.
  • Hi all

    Right Scottish Power Manweb?

I use them for gas and they seem cheaper at the moment but I have a standing charge so untill I get my winter bill I am not that convinced.

If you sign up for both with paperless and pay by D.D by the month it works out cheaper than the rest but with the new increases to raw costs there is not a lot in it. Believe it or not I still have a pre-payment meter for elec with B.Gas and only pay 6.24 per unit!!! I think the whole energy thing has gone mad.

By the way Martin was on form today with old Vine on Rad2... Let me Know if you are a Rad 2 fan like me as @ 37 it worries me that I am turning into a T.O.G! You will know what I am on about

    i'm only 31 and proud to be a TOG ! ::)

I'm just looking to change my gas and leccie, it keeps coming up as scottish power being cheapest, but i'm in 2 minds now after reading this post.

i'm currently with powergen for both gas and leccie and i pay £25 per month for each by DD, is that too much?

We've been with Scottish Power for a few years and last August I finally went 'online' and got the capped rate with the dual fuel discount until 2006.

Took heed of Martin's note about time to switch so went through all my bills, worked out the KWH etc and used 3 of the online comparision sites to find out the cheapest supplier.

Most annoyed - I am already with them! No-one can beat SP because of my capped, online, dual fuel deal apart from T+ but very quickly decided not to go there.

So there's me looking forward to slicing a little bit more off my monthly bill and I can't! Unless I switch off all the lights and cook by candle light!

Oh well, suppose I ought to glad that it means I've been on the right track for the past year ;D ;D
    Nice to save.

  • Our experience with ScottishPower has left me with mixed feelings.

Originally our utility suppliers were Manweb (electricity) and British Gas.

I fell out with British Gas for reasons which I will not go into suffice to say I started looking for an alternate supplier. I enquired with Scottish Power for a dual fuel tarrif which seemed to offer savings over British Gas even before a discount for dual fuel.

It was a no brainer to change from British Gas and sign up with Scottish Power. All was well for about 3 years and worthwhile savings were experienced but then..

A problem came to light that took me several months and lots of phone calls to Scottish Power, Transco and several of the watchdog organisations related to the gas supply. Transco replaced the imperial Gas meter with a metric meter and the new meter number did not get relayed to Scottish Power for some reason. I ended up getting vastly higher bills for the Gas since the third party company (Accuread) who sent people to read the gas meter just read the meter and input the value to a handheld device.

Despite repeated calls, Scottish Power failed to update my account with the new meter number and even when they did, they were still billing it as an imperial meter. Finally the penny dropped and an adjustment was made to my account and I am now a satisfied customer.

    The moral....

Check your bills, read your own meter occasionally and don't be afraid to complain if nothing seems to be actioned on your complaint. I received a goodwill gesture as a result of all the inconvienience I suffered.

  • I switched to Scottish Power in March 2004 after this forum and utility pricing sites flagged it up as a good deal. In return for my new business, Scottish Power put through two huge price increases.

I've now applied to join equipower.co.uk and expect to save 20-25% on my Scottish Power costs. Equipower genuinely have no standing order charges or tiered rates, which amount to the same thing.

    My energy useage is low.

    Regards
