its got nothing to do with being committed its more to do with the fact that the company have obviousley thought that to make the passing of information a bit more interesting they have decided to treat people to pizza and not to be so formal. you will always get people who go this is not fair im not being paid or who genuinely cannot go.

Thing is thought how much work will actually get done when the lads start drinking and the women start gossiping and then go to the toilet together and stuff . i think mixing social/work is not a good idea

if they were doing it in the office then i could perhaps understand and think this is a good idea

  • if required to go to these things, should be on (PAID?) company time...
Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)
  • Sometimes you have to go for these things. If there is promotion going and have decided between you and another colleague. For these pizza evenings, you didn't go and the other one did, then chances are they will give the promotion to the other person as shows they are commited to the team and company.

  • When I used to work part time when I was a student, I normally volunteered to attend pointless lectures, seiminars etc as 1. every dept had to be represented and 2. FREE FOOD.

It didn't matter if I didn't take any notice of the meeting (made myself look interested) as just handed over some notes and Powerpoint slide pictures to the dept manager

Where do you work, RBK? What's your job?

Theoretically maybe... but in the real world is it worth making a fuss about? You have very little to gain and potentially a lot to lose (they may pay you, or they may tell you not to come, either way you will be remembered as the only one who made a fuss!)

I have to say, when I have managed people I am always aware of the ones who are prepared to do that little bit extra, and the ones who kick up a fuss every time they feel they may have a reason, however petty, and have to be out the door on the dot every time.

And to be honest, it is the former who tend to be a pleasure to work with, who are the ones I would be first to consider for promotions, and for whom I would tend to have more time for if they needed me to be a bit flexible for them.

RBK I think you are making the right decision by going, I do not feel this is a conscious attempt to exploit you, merely a social way they have thought of for the staff who are being trained up to pass on the information whilst it is still fresh in their minds.

Now that's a good point. RBK, you might need to leave early or start early one day, and your boss is far likely to look favourably on that if he remembers you putting yourself out for him.

  • In this economic climate I'd say it is foolish to not go for what really are petty reasons - you don't mention family or other commitments, just that you are dieting - big whoop.

Maybe you should quit and let someone more committed have your job :)

I don't think that is a fair comment. When I am at work I give 100%. Attending a silly pizza evening has nothing to do with how committed I am to my job.

Woohoo! I'm normal! Gotta go tell the cat.
  • You don't get promoted in my type of work so that is irrelevant.

In the past I have often come in early or stayed late to finish a task but it makes no difference, they aren't interested.
