unless its urgent and important, these 'weekly' things are totally redundant.
it doesnt matter what OP's excuse for not going is, the point is after hours its their time to do with as they please...
i dont see how its 'stubborn and inflexible'.0 -

I've got a trip to Boston next week - i'll be loosing 1 1/2 days of a weekend and 4 evenings of my own time. Slightly tempted to ask for a day in lieu for that one. I'd never 'kick up a fuss' about it though
another way of looking at this is - I have work away from home. I will happily do this to further my career.
If you are in Boston you may be able to go home in the evening - not sure how far away you are from that part of Lincolnshire0 -

You may be a hard worker, but as someone else has pointed out, it still makes you stubborn and inflexible.
I guess it depends on how you want to progress in your career. If you want to come in 9 'til 5 and work hard all your life and nothing else, then fair enough - companies often need grafters to get the tedious stuff done. These people are often taken for granted, and thanks isn't always given, as you have found out. General dogsbody sorta stuff???
Promotions and praise go to those who not only work hard, but are flexible, and actually care about the company they work for, and want to raise the company profile, not just their own. They are the sort of people who have a positive attitude, rather than trying to shoot down/sl*g off the company when they suggest something.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
pinkshoes if you actually saw me doing my job I don't think you would think I was that bad an employee.
I'm positive towards work and I'm always suggesting new ideas, ways to increase business, keeping things up to date to make everyones life easier.
I am quite flexible. I often come in early to help out/cover, go to other branches when asked without making a fuss.-->♥<-- Sugar Coated Owl -->♥<--

So why the big fuss over a couple of evenings, pizza, and discussing the training course?Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

...because to begin with we weren't even asked to attend just told it's compulsary. I felt that it was wrong for them to insist we give up our time to attend a meeting to discuss work. I'm not going to go into it now but I have an issue with food which makes things like this a really big deal to me.-->♥<-- Sugar Coated Owl -->♥<--

OP you don't have to justify yourself-you felt you were being taken advantage of and raised it. A lot of people probably thought you were overeacting but obviously you had your particular reasons for not wanting to go that the rest of us wouldn't have been concerned with.
As to other posters saying hard work will be rewarded etc- of course the hard worker will generally be favoured over the slacker but open your eyes, look around your own workplace, life isn't fair! I bet everyone reading this can think of at least one collegue who does sweet FA and never gets called on it. Few workplaces that I've ever been in have had the ability or intelligence to treat employees on an individual basis which normally means the grafters are treated no better than the slackers. In this scenario who can blame people for taking a dim view of extra work, unpaid socials etc? if you're lucky enough to be appreciated for the special person that you are at workthen I'm all for going the extra mile but otherwise you do as much as you're paid or given credit for I reckon
