DVD Recorder £68.94 @ Asda (merged)

Finally got Asda's own brand "Dual" DVD recorder to record from Freeview box but still cannot record from my integrated digital/analogue TV? No return call from Asda's technical help as promised by them. Good recording via freeview box, just as good as watching TV live. Cannot understand why the recorder wont pick up signal from TV, my video records from TV's digital signal no prob.0

I saw this in Asda on Monday lunchtime priced £68.94. I went back at 5 to get one and left one on the shelf.
My worst mistake however was buying Asda's Mr DVD 8x DVD+R 25 cake pack. I have had a greater than 50% failure rate with them so they will be going back. Have ordered a recommended pack from ebuyer along with a cheap I-link firewire cable for my camcorder.
I have started backingup my VHS to DVD and using the disks at their 4 hour setting, as funy as it sounds, the quality of the picture is BETTER than the VHS. Can't work that out!!
I have mine connected via scarts as follows and it works well:
RF >>>via co-ax>>> Freeview >>>>>> VHS >>>>>> DVR >>>>>>>> TV
This is a great bit of kit and worth buying to empty your shelves of VHS tapes. Easy to use, clear instructions.
PS. have now made my CyberHome DRV-1600 region free by pressing the following the following on the remote.
1. Power on with No disc
2. Press Setup
3. Press Red Record button.
4. Enter 8,1,0,5.
5. Press Red Record button.
6. Enter 0 (multiregion) In box where 2 (Europe, Japan) is.
7. Press Setup.
8. Power OffGive a man a fish and he'll eat for a day.

Can anyone advise on a reliable DVDRW+ to use in the Cyberhome machine.
Bought one last weekend am using JVC DVD+RW have tried 3 and recording fails on all of them after one hour has been recorded ! The machine alternates between pause and record after an hour ! And then close process fails ! When disc is trioed to play machine tries to recover disc and title but lastt recording always fails !
Cant exchange the machine as none of my local Asdas have any more instock at minute. Would prefer an exchange or is it worth trying another brand which other uses have used with suceess in this machine.
I havent tried a DVD+R for obvious reasons ! ( dont want to wastes a load if machine is faulty !
Anyone got any advice.
Thanks in anticipation

Just a thought but maybe consumers need to boycott DVD Recorders (both standalone units and computer drives) because there seems to be an enormous amount of incompatiblity between blank media and hardware. Maybe this need to be officially looked into by some governmental body. If you buy a blank audio or video tape (and on the whole CD-Rs) they will work in any equipment you care to put it in.
Also, virtually every budget DVD recorder on the market seems to have extremely mixed reviews both good and bad, there doesn't seem to be any consistency in quality.
Have a good day.
p.s. Argos has an offer on a LiteOn LVW-5006 for £99.99 see their website.0 -
Hi,
I've just upgraded the firmware on Cyberhome 1600 recorder....
The Maxell disks ( DVD+RW) now work no problem....
Also Tesco DVD+RW work fine....
I'm told it does knock out the divx player - but a patch does exist
to get it back....

Where abouts is this patch?0

I'm returning the Dual DVD recorder bought from Asda this week , it refuses to record digital signal from my integrated TV although will record from a freeview box. If anyone is disappointed in their Asda machine consider this, I have posted this on the Asda site "20% off DVD recorders over £100 @Argos between 17th & 25th November". I bought LiteOn LVW5006 DVD Recorder. reduced from £129.99 to £99.99 a saving of over 20%. Great DVD recorder if anyone is thinking of buying one, no hesitation in recommending it. The LiteOn 5006 is an "all write" recorder, i.e. it records on all disc formats. The record/playback quality is terrific, its easy to use and although £30 more than Asda's machine this DVD recorder is well worth the extra, that is of course my personal opinion. EdinburghLass recommended LiteOn to me many months ago and I'm sure will vouch for the quality and reliability.
PS. If you buy the LiteOn DVD Recorder from Argos take advantage of their 10 pack DVD+RW discs ½ price offer with this machine @ £6.49 (item no 534/3212)0 -

I've just set up my £68.94 DVD Recorder and I'm very pleased with the picture and sound quality Video, freeview and tuner connections all work fine BUT I must re-iterate the warnings about disc compatibility. I've wasted £20 on a spindle of discs which will not work in the machine. There appear to be more DVD+R brands that do not work than those that do. The Asda Helpline have prepared a list of makes they have tested in the machine and which 'should' work. I'm returning to the store to suggest the list be given out when the recorder is purchased. It takes the edge off my bargain but you never know, perhaps they will refund the £20.0
