Average Monthy Gas direct debit

I find it hard to believe. Most people I have spoken to have a gas bill of about 80.00 a month upwards, about 40 a month electric.
My friend lives in a 2 bed all electric flat. OK all electric and his electric DD is 37 a month. We have had an electric meter monitor connected to his supply cable as his electric DD has increased from 32 a month. His 47 inch TFT tele, 2 PVRs and dvd player take 250w when all on, he has a 11 watt energy saving light bulb, 3KW kettle (used about 4 times a day), in the kitchen a fridge freezer, a 6 watt energy saving light bulb and a table top oven, 2.7KW over sink water heater (uses 2 minutes ever couple of hours to heat back up or 10 minutes from fully empty. He slips his landlady a fiver to do his washing/drying. His meter shows he's using about 8 units a day and his DD is 37.00 a month.
What electric devices do you have and how much do you use them? eg. Tele, computer, lighting, heating, fridge freezer, cooker, washing machine, tumble dryer, hoover?
Am curious how you can get by with using such little electric/gas.0 -
Wow, I am pretty jealous of some of your monthly DD's!
I am in the process of changing suppliers (a whole other story!) but our monthly dd's were £100 for gas and £60 for elec and we live in a 3 bed semi (was a 2 bed until we had a double storey extension to side and single across the rear). A recent exchange with the supplier (atlantic elec&gas) found that we were owed nearly £600 from severly overpaying on the gas and that we owed nearly £300 from not paying enough for your elec. We have a combi boiler, gas hob and 8 rads0 -
I'm in a three bed semi, gas CH & hot water. Hot water is on 20 minutes a day (there are showers in the gym for mornings!), and generally things switched off if not in use. My gas is £10/month and electricity £20/month. Looking at how much I'm in credit by, if I'm careful during the winter, even with prices going up (mine haven't done yet), this should be right.
Do you have a conventional boiler or combi? As you quote a duration for your water being on (20 mins) I presume you have a hot water tank - surely 20 mins isn't long enough to heat up your water?0 -

Could be. We used to get enough hot water for showers in 40mins.
These threads have made me feel a bit better because we are high users. Part of that is a large household but even so, we have been wasteful because we have cut down fairly easily. I'm planning further cutbacks but will only compromise so far - not going to be cold or obsessing about whether I can put the washing machine on. So it's good to see others are paying what I aspire to (I'd be happy to pay £120 a month for dual fuel). All those £10 and £20 posts, while maybe possible for single person households, are off the scale for me.0 -
yeah £10 of electric is only 55 units (based on 18p/unit), the same amount of energy a 36 inch TV and PVR (250w/hour) uses in 27 days at 8 hours viewing a day. That's before any other consumption, washing machine, lighting, Fridge/freezer etc.
I find it hard to believe. Either that or the Direct Debit is set way to low and will end up with a whopping electric bill.
I would say I am prudent with my energy. I have a 28 inch tele, PVR, 10 (used about 8-10 hours a day), energy saving light bulbs in the house, Washing Machine & Tumble Dryer (used twice a week), Dish Washer (used twice a week), Electric Cooker (rarely used), counter top induction hob & Nuwave counter top oven (used daily), Fridge/Freezer, 12KW On Demand water heater (used for 5 min shower a day and a few time a day for cleaning), 50w server on 24/7. My electric DD is 61.00 a month. In Winter with heaters on you can ad another 30-40 a month to that.
Still working out cheaper than the 40 a month for electric and 60 a month for gas (oh and the £20 a month for BG home care and £10 a month for depreciation)0 -
£10 a month at about 12p/unit works out average daily use 2-3kwh if I worked it out right. I think we use this with just the fridge/freezer/phone/boiler being on 24/7.0

Do you not have a tele, radio, washing machine, tumble dryer, lighting, computer, router, Digibox, kettle, fridge. freezer?
You are dealing with a different measurement. KWh is a measurement of how much energy is being used in one hour, not an accumulative measurement.
How long have you been with you're supplier? One unit of electricity is 1Kw NOT 1Kwh. If you are using 3Kw a day that is 3 units, 3 x 12p = 36p a day or £11.57 a month. This sounds too good to be true.
A Fridge and Freeze uses 4 units a day between them which doesn't leave a lot for spair0 -
Sorry, I meant kw - when I say 2-3 kw a day, I mean just for those 'background things'.
By the time we switch on everything else, we're up to 13units a day. Last winter, it was 18.
So yes, 3units a day would be too good to be true!0 -
I was gonna say
At the mo Im on 10 units a day in summer working out at about 60.00 a month0 -
I live on my own in a 2 bedroom semi
I am not wasteful, but am not frugal either. I turn things off etc when not in use but also dont sit in the cold for the sake of saving some pennies. if Im cold, the heating goes on!
I pay £38 a month as a combined amount for gas and electic, so thats £19 a month each i suppose?
I am due a bill but was £72 in credit after the last bill in May.
I am with Scottish power and have a fixed price tarriff till 2010.Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0
