We took Glad's advice and got a plain one from Tesco. He wants to draw the angel of the north on it. He liked the robot too, so decided on the drinks bottle with that on.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

It's so lovely to see parents trying their best to help their kids have the best possible start to their school life.So much excellent advice already, not much I can add really. Agree about bringing water bottle to keep in the classroom, just remember to name it and regularly check it is brought home- even my class of 10 year olds never remembered to take them home last year!If your child has an asthma inhaler or other medication, remember the school needs an inhaler to be kept at school, worth checking periodically that it's not running low/in good working order.Agree that at first your little one may be exhausted after a full day, if he's not up to reading his book himself at first don't worry, the main focus is 'sharing' the story, so just look at the pictures and chat about what you see/what is happening/what might happen next. There's nothing at all wrong in getting him a desk, gives him his own space for working and gives clear messages about where homework should be done. Love those Lakeland lunchboxes!Hope the first day goes well, sure it will.Sarah x

maybe it would be better to call the desk his 'craft desk' where he can do all his colouring, crafty stuff etc
and then when he does get homework suggest his own desk would be the ideal place to do that too :)

    What a useful thread. :)

GR, I was in your shoes just a fortnight ago - panicking! We're in Scotland though and our schools started nearly two weeks ago, so I'm now an experienced mum of a schoolchild :rotfl: and the good news is... everything will be fine! :T :j

I was worried (and cried :o ) on the first day, but DS1 was happy as Larry. In fact, he still is (although we don't get an awful lot out of him when he gets back - thank you so much to the poster who suggested the "what was the best thing" technique - will try it tomorrow! :T )

I don't really have anything clever to add. :o DS1's school produced a useful little leaflet with all the basic information for P1 parents: things like break times, reminder to bring in a snack, label everything, what to include in a PE kit (just plimsoles and shorts - they wear the normal polo shirts for PE).

We get a letter about everything in their bag, including a reminder about PE day (although we're supposed to keep the PE kit in school all the time... hmm, when are we supposed to wash it then? :p )

So all in all, relax and enjoy the last few days with your little boy. It's scary how quickly they grow up :o
