Nothing like a bit of healthy competition for the big E when there's a small and rather cheap lsiting/auction service going at Ebid.
And that's the drama about the whole issue. If eBid is the only reasonable competition then there is no competition at all. And here's why:
- eBid owns eBid.co.uk domain, but they lost/missed/not acquired ebid.com, ebids.com, ebids.co.uk, ebids.net. All of which are at the moment generic spam sites. From security point of view this is commercial suicide. All it takes is for owner of those sites to open auction site (or worse yet - !!!!!! business) at ebid.com and ebid.co.uk would effectively dug their grave with own shovel. Not to mention potential for scamming. Forget ebay phishing emails - this time "please verify your login details" emails could actually be sent from ebid.com or ebids.com! This is unthinkable. They had 9 years to fix it and they haven't. That's simply insane.
- Amateurish approach. Take a look at their search for example (I encourage you to try it yourself) - you type "lego block*" in search field and get "SEPTIC TANK / CESSPIT - SMELL AND BLOCKAGE TREATMENT" as top hit, you know at some point something has gone really, really wrong in development process. Considering they've been running "online auctions since 1999" - if they haven't understood the importance of search by now....
- The listing model is unsustainable. On one hand seller+ accounts seem like a lot of money to someone who wants to get rid of some junk in the attic, and wants "buy it now" feature rather than letting all his stuff go for 99p on the site with little traffic, on the other hand £50 lifetime accounts are cheap enough from commercial outfit point of view and since listing afterwards is free you can only imagine what would happen if eBid ever got popular. Whole new meaning to listing and keyword spamming.
We need ebay alternative. And I was very optimistic when I checked eBid for the first time as potential alternative. It was fast, looked good, felt sure footed. But then you look closer and it turns out there are massive holes in their business model. I mean - the fact that what should have been their main domain - ebid.com - belongs to some PO Box schmuck in US just completely swept me off my feet. It's almost as bad as that ifoods thing on Dragon's Den last week.0 -
I sell usually by auction so I wont be out too much except for their increase in FVF which happens yearly anyway.:hello:v :money:0

hi, yip, 99p auctions will run dry shortly - unless you don't mind the gamble and it's something that you know will definately attract bids.. even up to £5.00 is a gamble, either that or people will start charging a whole bunch more for postage (although they're supposedly not allowed to they will do anyway), I have seen postage costs at £8 and £9 - for top within the UK.
Thanks for the info v0n - how naieve am I??0 -

Auction listing fees are unchanged, it is BIN's and shops that are affected by this most recent charge. The FVFs have gone up for successful sales on all the formats though.
I sell a great deal of books and for them there is no change at all on auctions as the listing prices are cheaper than other items and the FVFs have been a bit higher anyway for ages.
if you read the announcement it says:
Note: There are no changes to Insertion fees for Auction listings. Please see the eBay Fees page for the existing Insertion fees.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. For those sick of ebay - join ebid and tell your friends, let's build the next empire and hopefully they won't be another greedbay - never under-estimate the power of the people!
Ebid doesn't even come close to ebay.
Having registered with ebid which cost me a few quid as they charged me a credit card check fee I have sold exactly 1 item in 1 year which sold for very little money, sticking it on ebay with the fees would have made me far more.
On ebid I have lots of non paying bidders and one unjustified negative as anyone can bid on your item as long as they register a buying account with any email address.
If ebid were any good ebay would have bought them by now like what they did with Baazee.0 -
Just read about the new changes today and to be honest I am having problems understanding just how I am supposed to save money as e-bay are claiming in their e-mail to me.
I have an e-bay basic shop which will now go up to £14.99 a month.
I usually sell DVD's for £1.99 and £2.99 so how much better or worse off will I be, if we take the above example of 1 DVD selling for £2.99 at the new rates.
Can anyone help work this out for me as I'm confused....0 -

Unless you are high volume seller, I think they are telling you to close your shop! Apart from the visibility there are no great advantages for smaller sellers to have a shop now inventory format is no longer. Only time will tell if this is worth while.
I suspect they are trying to seperate and streamline shop sellers as seperate businesses hence the hike. I have a featured shop and am likely to downgrade unless there are other benefits I can't yet see. It is border line whether having the cheaper listing possibilities make that nuch difference. There is a check system they have in place to compare fees (look through the new announcemennts) so I think they are prepared and even want some sellers to close shops..0
