I discovered Aldi when the queues were too long in ASDA last xmas. It's on the whole a great store tho the specials can be WAY too tempting!
Must buys:
Power Force muti purpose cleaner (better than flash IMO)
Healthy Balance Cerial (not found anything the same elsewhere and I love it)
The fizzy grape juice drinks
The real lemon lemonade (better than asdas)
Waver biscuits
Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner
galpharm ibuprofen, paraceteamol and hayfever tablets (same as anyone elses just cheaper)
Jay cloths
local strawberrys in season
all the bakery stuff
don't buy:
imported fruit (tends to be past it's best)
Frozen BBQ ribs (tough as old boots)
Beef stock cubes (too bland)2009 wins: Signed Saxon CD, Solar Torch, Drumsticks, Priest Feast Tix, Watch, Hammerfest tix :beer:0 -
Their luxury muesli is a must, 50% nut and only £1.49. Also their Tennessee choc chip cookies, better than M&S but a little addictive. Frozen Chicken nuggets are all chicken breast meat, as our their 2 x southern fried frozen chicken steaks. If you have not ever tried that muesli and become a convert, please let me know (I never really even liked the stuff, and my friend has to removed the nuts because her teeth aren't strong enough!!)0

Newnhak - I'm sorry that I'm probably not a brilliant source of prices on Lidl olive oil - this is because they have 2 different sorts. The stuff I bought yesterday was £1.99 for 750ml, and comes in a long thin bottle. (About 18 inches high, really long and thin). The variety that comes in a square bottle is cheaper I think - from memory about the same price but a litre instead of 750cc - I was a bit disappointed they didn't have any of this last night. It may not be cheaper than Tesco's, but it is really really nice - hubby is half Maltese and so really knows his olive oil, and rates it very highly! (It's extra virgin as well - is the Tesco's one?) Excellent quality stuff.
Tom puree is not much cheaper than anywhere else, but is very sweet and good stuff - 25p a tube. I only included this for completeness, though! The things I hadn't seen/noticed listed before were balsamic vinegar and Thai rice - I think they are seriously cheaper at Lidl, but happy to be proved wrongEx board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -
I'm a big fan of Aldi, since introduced by my Austrian girlfriend. We save a fortune there. The running gear and winter outdoor underwear for £6 is all great. She bought an £80 exercise bike there too some months ago. They had one with all the same functions (including heart rate measuring) in Waitrose for £350.
I've bought Crane Sports running shoes that are perfectly good for something like £12, rather than Nike's £40+++.
Aldi Swiss Style Musli is identical to Alpen (and I have always eaten a LOT of Alpen so trust me, I know! 99p for 1kg is a bargain.
Tubs of natural yoghurt for 45p - £1 in the other supermarkets.
Proper good British brown bread for 45p a loaf rather than £1 or so for virtually identical Hovis bread.
And if you're having a party, buy all the dips, crisps etc. there. You'll again save a fortune. You can always decant the dips into your own containers, but noone would know anyway. And they are perfectly good stuff.
The great thing about shopping at Aldi i that those who recognise the brands are always impressed that you shop there too, and those than don't know the brands won't know anyway. But I'm proud to shop there!0 -

s and W
e £16.99. Lovely light red wine!! :beer:0 -
Re Lidls...buy their tools when on offer, likewise tv's etc. This is on their laptop, no problem with it for last three years and good spec for the price.0

Wow so much information, what is needed is a survey of products, so everyone votes for their top 5 products at each store (tick the box of your fav. five products (Aldi & Lidl), and then we can see which product gets the most votes. Is this possible on this site? :rolleyes:0

I'll tick your boxes! :rolleyes:A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof was to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Fraserca wrote:Support ? - Like you get when you buy something from someone who actually knows what he is selling? I think not - you have a telephone helpline and a shop that really can only offer you money back.
Buy local from people who know. It needn't cost much more and if something goes wrong you have personal service.
This regarding Targa computers from Lidl. I think that comment was slightly unfair. I do not see the difference between buying a PC from Lidl compared to Woolworths, Dixons, Comet, Currys, Office World, Staples or any other high street shop whose sole business is not computers. You are highly unlikely to find any staff in those shops who know anything technical about computers either! You will still be referred to a support line which in some cases can be awful and very expensive to call. Plenty of people buy Dell for their quality of build and cheapness but their indian call centres support leaves a lot to be desired. If Targa PCs from Lidl are a good product and there is good telephone support then that is all you would need to be on the BUY list compared to other shops.0 -
On my way home from work I drive pretty close to a Tesco and litrally a few hundred yards from the Tesco is Netto and Farmfoods. I scouted around the Netto first, came back with some 14p washing up liquid. Its the old type stuff - not so concentrated as Fairy is these days. The concentrated stuff only needs a small amount but lets face it who can actually squirt out a small amount? No you squirt the bottle and tons of it comes out at a time and before you know it you've used far more than you actually needed. So I prefer the old stuff and at 14p for a huge bottle who cares!? Also picked up some cheap pink lady apples that can be quite expensive in Tesco. Farmfoods (a sort of downmarket Iceland), whom I would tar with the same marketing brush as Lidl/Aldi/Netto was next door so I picked up some top brand name stuff, eg assorted Birds Eye frozen meals 5 for £5. They also had really cheap chocolate bars and biscuits... eg any five for £1. Mishaped biscuit assortment BIG BOX! 1Kg for £2 very nice and great value. Would keep the kids quiet I would imagine.
I then went to Tesco and bought the few things I couldn't find in these cheap shops, like Muller rice and bread rolls. But Tesco bread from the instore bakery is rubbish I agree with the previous poster a few pages ago. Morrisons do good bread though.0
