Well done newhak but I'm afraid your conclusions dont hold water. From that list I work out the overall average saving is approx 8.5%. The odd few pennies on individual items may not seem much but the overal cost is significant over a full trolley.

Personally I find superior quality at Aldi and Lidl when compared to Tesco's dull fare.

I meant to include Lidl fruit juice in my previous post. The 1.5l orange juice is particularly good.
if i had known then what i know now
  • Aldi Shropshire blue cheese and unsalted are great too

Well it wasn't a full shop. As I walked round I tried to gauge other items and things such as dried pasta, eggs , washing powder, olive oil, yoghurts, kitchen roll and red leicester cheese were not as cheap as the Tesco equivalent that I usually buy. I only bought what seemed cheaper at the time.

As I would have to go to both shops to make the best saving and neither are very close to me, I don't consider it worth it. Athough I may give it another go though when I next have to do a full shop.
If someone has a LIDL close by then it is definitely worth going in there to see what you can get.

I tried the cornflakes earlier (nighttime snack!) and they were very nice.

Stocked up in Lidl tonight - tomato puree, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, chicken, rice

Eastchristina - how much is the olive oil because I couldn't find any in LIDL's that was cheaper than the tesco one I buy?

Also didn't see any tomato puree - how much was this?

Unlikely that they have any of these in stock at the moment, but their offers always come around again and this one is worth snapping up - we bought a panini maker for £15, not only is that cheaper than most, but it is excellent quality, really big hot plates that heat up really well, and as well as making great paninis it's great for roasting veg on too - almost as good as doing them in the oven but hardly any oil needed!

You all realise that the Tesco marketing approach is to make you think

    a) That the Value stuff is inferior
    B) That you are a cheapscate and a bad mother if that's all you can feed the kids with( the kids can see the cr*p blue labels )
    C) That you will be embarassed at the checkout when other people look at your basket.

The whole Tesco ( and other major supermarkets ) approach VERY cleverly done and you are under their influence from the moment you enter their car park.

At least with the discount box shifters you only have to overcome the initial hurdle of leaving the Tesco indoctrination behind at the entrance. After that its a question of your OWN opinion of how you want to spend your money that counts.

Mind you that's not to say that the discounters don't do a lot of manipulation themselves to make you buy more than you need. But at least there is no overt coercion.

Is there any way the posts could be collated? A complete pain in the bum, but rather than reading 27 pages of posts, there could be one page with the number of people who recommend vs the number of people who detest a product (baked beans spring to mind).

    Just a thought...
    Waddle you do eh?
  • I am a MoneySaving Virgin so apologies for any errors!

I had to tell you about all the great stuff I buy from Aldi

Flowers - Fantastically cheap, excellent range and always last a long time.
Lemon flavour sponge cake - lovely, exeedingly sweet but really good
Lemon wafers - not seen them for a while, used to have orange flavour available too but Lemon were better.
Fudge - mum likes this one
    Chocolate raisins
    Strawberry crunch cereal
    All fruit juices
Norpack spreadable butter - but hard when first out of fridge but for my discerning pallet is perfect.
Tomato and Basil soup - hubby's fave
Minestrone soup - hubby and I did a taste comparison against tesco one night, tesco's was much redder (more tomato puree I guess) but for my taste, the Aldi one was much, much nicer and of course cheaper
Washing powder tablets - work as well as any other
Crisps - poppadom ones are great
    Tinned tomato
    Tinned kidney beans
BAKED BEANS - fab!!! (try them yourself and make your own mind up, sauce is redder than Heinz but both hubby and I prefer these to any others
Ale - double drop and one other - again, hubby likes these
Shiraz in a box - top notch!
Chocolate Tea Cakes (the ones with marshmallow and jam) - loads more jam than any other I have tasted - the best!!
Tropical fruit packets (use these loads in cooking)
Ginger nuts - have a treacle flavour and quite hard but very tasty
    COLESLAW - the best anywhere
Cooked meats - good range all taste fine
    Chicken in BBQ sauce (chilled)
Part baked ciabatta, excellent for parties, barbies as it keeps for ages
Dinner party rolls - ditto, couldn't find any sesame rolls anywhere to have with my home-made soup and finally tracked some down to here! - is it just me or is Tesco bread AWFUL!!

Weekly offers - hubby is a DIY fanatic so often sends mum round on Thursdays to pick up the latest offer - not had a problem with any of these and believe me - we have had a lot of them!!! Recent one was a combination kitchen rinse tap, having recently seen one for over £100, I snapped one up for £20 from Aldi.

I have to say, I usually have to finish my shopping off elsewhere but once you buy the bulk of your stuff from Aldi first, its much cheaper then to finish off in Asda.

You can roast veg on a George Foreman grill - can do 2 small peppers at a time on a Baby George, and they are delicious. I lubricate with spray oil, so very few calories.
  • I posted on here a few weeks ago raving about Aldi, and judging by my last visit, people are getting the message. I usually have the place to myself, but this week it was really busy. Thanks Martin, I'll never be able to park now !!

Must try's from Aldi are :

    Chocolate digestive biscuits (McVities)
    Romeo bars (Bounty)
    Tea cakes
    Crisps & nuts
    Plug in air fresheners
    Dog chews
    Tip to Tail Cat biscuits
    Any cleaning product
    Bread sticks with sesame seeds
    Luxury ice cream (especially strawberry)
    Bacon
    Sausages
Chicken & leek pie (in chiller cabinet)
    Flowers
    Yoghurts
    Fresh orange juice
Prepacked smoked cod (in chiller cabinet)
