I regularly buy from Aldi 's...

Carlos Stone Baked Pizza, excellent at 99p each
    Mini Jaffa Cakes
    Frozen Mince at £1.99 bag
    Beautifully Butterfully type Margarine
    Cold Meats
Fresh Soups at 89p are nice (especially the chicken and sweetcorn, but not seen that one lately)
The Brioche with chocolate chips is yummy
Alcopops are not bad (about £2.79 for 4)
    Romano Tomato Pasta sauce
    Bockwurst Skinless Sausages in Brine.
Their part baked rolls and baguettes aren't too bad

Do any of them flog organic produce too?

I only have Lidl nearby, and unfortunately, there are very few organic prducts on offer - I know I've seen an odd one, but can't remember what it might have been. I try to buy organic where I can (have set up a food co-op to get most things), but Lidl is great for when organic is just too expensive, not available, or where you fall off the wagon - I mean, if you're going to eat junk food, don't kid yourself that organic junk food is any better for you.

To that end I don't think I've seen anyone mention Lidl's FANTASTIC maderia style cakes. For 99p they offer several styles (marble, vanilla sugar topped, hazelnut crunch topping, lemon/lime flavor) and these cakes must be close to 400g They're about 15 inches long and taste yummy. I bought one for my son's birthday, cut it up a bit and made a great fire-engine. Total cost was about £4 with 3/4 going on icing, licquorice wheels, hose, and ladder.

For those not lucky enough to have one of these shops nearby, here is my opinion.

Lidl is an up-market Netto, Aldi is an up-market Lidl. ;)

    Lidl, Can recommend,
    Tiramisou Ice cream,
Packet Cream Vegetable soup, Better than Bachelors.
Luxury Coleslaw ,less than 50p for 500g!
Melton Mowbray pork pies, 6 pack
Cranberry, Apple and Orange Fruit juices,
    Hams and Continental cheeses,
Ginger biscuits 25p, Choc Digestives 45p.
    Tools and hardware.
    Car Park Clearout Sales

    Aldi
    Electrical goods,
    Wines,
    Tools,
    Baileys like Cream,
    Computer stuff

    Netto
    Chuckouts

    Aldi

Buy - their black olives (which are sometimes hard to find in our local store as they seem to mix them with the jars of green olives).

Best olives available in UK according to my 4 year old daughter.

Their plain chocolate is brilliant they do a 74% one for 55p!!! But even better I think is the 70% Ecuador extra bitter - for I think 89p. Superb quality.

And remember that plain chocolate is good for your health. Eating 100 g per day (yes, each and every day), lowers your blood pressure.

Hi! I'm a 25 yr old living in posh West London, earning an OK salary, but every month I was broke. I looked at my bank statements and was SHOCKED to discover how much I spent in my Sainsbury's Local, ASDA, and Tescos every month - something like £200! Going every day, AND doing weekly shops really does add up.

Inspired by this website, I realised I had to curb this immediately - and my last two shopping trips have seen me cruising the aisled of my (fairly) local LIDL and ALDI. Both times I managed to get a weeks worth of groceries, and alchohol, for around £15!

I preferred ALDI, but this was mainly beacause it was a newer, quieter store. It was clean and the food was all easy to find. It didn't feel like I was shopping abroad - as LIDL does - but I still enjoyed it.

From my ALDI shop I can fully reccomend:

Fresh Pork Chops - much nicer than any other regular supermarket, and cheap at £1.39 for 3 chops.

Family Chicken Pie - Very tasty and a lot of meat. At £1.99 it is great value, one dinner and a couple of weekday lunches.

Crunchy Nut Cornflakes - 99p and much tastier than supermarket own brands

Washing Up Liquid - so far it is producing loads of soapy bubbles for washing up my dirty dishes.

Wholegrain Yoghurts - tried the Strawberry and Muesli varieties - very tasty and good for you to boot!

I haven't tried the 55p tortellini yet - but I expect it to be yummy too!

Can I add another vote for the 1.5l orange juice - fantastic and cheap too!
Not sure if anyone's mentioned their Strong White Bread Flour at 49p (last time we looked!).
Fruit and veg is always going to be iffy - small choice. But the Spanish tomatoes come from Mazarron where we go for hols - so support our local community!
We also buy their dishwasher powder and cream cleaner. Cheaper than majors and does the job just as well.
A good variety of tinned fish (tuna, mackeral, etc.) but watch out for 'blown' tins.
Also agree with others that their range of cheeses, cold meats and such are excellent quality and value. Keep a watch for the 69p offer on Camembert! (Usually 99p compared with £1.30 or so in Sains.)

Thanks to all your posts, I had a successful trip to Aldi's this morning. Havent saved as much as some as my shopping was already about £50 per wk thanks to old style grocery challenge, but I have increased the quality of the food, for the same price ;)

Good (eaten so far lol): 80% pork sausages @ 1.49 per pack of 6. Only 2p for 12 more than Tesco equivalent which is on 46% pork. Bread rolls, extra thick bacon mmmm, pork salami, tear & share choc chip brioche, bratwurst.

Bad: Not found anything yet ;)

  • Netto:
Netto's wine selection can't be beat. I've had some superb Spanish reds for a fraction of the price of Tesco's.

    Aldi:
Stem ginger cookies. What can I say - better than home baked. Wow!

    Lidl:
    Traditional cloudy lemonade
Sparkling water - it just has a nicer taste than any other…
Cat food - cheap, but my normally snobby cat loves it.
    Swiss chocolates - excellent quality
Jaffa cakes - really zingy - yum.

What I Hate About All Three:
I reckon that the checkout staff play a game called "Hassle the Customer into Breaking His Eggs": they scan and hurl your goods at increasingly quick pace down the conveyor belt as you frantically try to pack them. I never manage to finish and have to crawl away, trolley in chaos, to finish packing in a corner under the gimlet stare of the Security Guard.
