I'm the same, has to be steaks and not chunks and absolutely never flakes, also has to be oil. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
Lidl - Dulano 3% fat lightly smoked ham 200g £1.09. German origin. Excellent product tasty and nice and dry not wet, greasy and slippery like a lot of UK chilled ham injected with untold water.0

Oh, by the way, my local Aldis now stock the Schöfferhofer Weizen gift pack.
Contains 5*500ml of the brew plus the original Weissbeer glass.
Cheers, stamford.
Some stores still flog off Tetley's, 12*440ml for 6.99
And the genuine Oktoberfest beer, "Spaten", is in. Not precisely cheap at £1.29 for 500ml, but an extremely nice Bavarian brew. Strongly recommended.0 -

I should be nearby a couple of Aldi's on my travels this week so I'll grab some. I bought 2 of those 5 litre kegs in Lidl today their Grafenwalder brand 1 x Pils 4.9% 1 x Hefe Weissbeir 5.0% - a snip at £8.99 each, both obviously conform to the Reinheitsgebot.0 -
Also give the Wernesgrüner 5l keg (Aldi) a try. That's a Germany-wide distributed top of the range premium pilsener from a traditional brewery, and far better beer than Lidl's own brand brews, as far as I'm concerned. £9.99, if I remember right.
I must admit I've never tried any Lidl's own brands except Maternus, a few years ago in Germany, and that was abominable. Everybody here recommends their Grafenwalder, so I'll check this out.0 -
I went to Lidl at lunch time to pick up some lebkucken but was confused by the expiry date. It said "sehr gut 12/2004". I didn't notice any other date on it but that can't be right?0

I get sneered at for using Lidls. Now I must admit I don't and I don't think I COULD use them for all my shopping, but making that extra effort to do two trips - Lidl's for most of it and Tesco's for the other stuff.....and a bit of experimentation with Lidl's products has really paid off.
To buy:
Pizza - get the pack of three Salami ones (same as Dr Oetker but £2.49 for 3!)
Jams and Marmalade
Coffee (the freeze dried stuff)
Biscuits and cakes. (try the seasonal white and chocolate covered round gingerbreads in the big bag!)
CHOCOLATE!! Some lovely continental stuff and bags of Mars/Snickers/Bounty copies)
Pasta
Pasta Sauce
Pesto
Ketchup
Strawberry Crunch cereal
Washing powder/liquid (massive bottles/boxes for a silly price)
Fabric conditioner
Cleaning sprays
Shower gel
Face Cream (Q10) - It's a marvel for the price!
Chilled Lasagne
Ham
Bacon medallions (no fat)
ICE CREAM (to DIE for) Try the Nocciolina?) one
Mini "Magnums"
Oven Chips
Juices
High Juice Squash (the blackcurrant is identical to proper Ribena but 99p)
Yogurts
Yogurt drinks
Cheese, incl cheddar and mozerrella
Big bottles of olive oil
Fillet steak
Loads more that I'll add later
Don't buy (in my opinion)
Fruit and veg. Well you CAN, but check it carefully)
Tinned fruit
Tinned chilli
Baked beans
SOME of the frozen stuff I've not been keen on, but I've not tried it all.
Chicken soup
Packet pasta n sauce
Potato salad
Sausage rolls/Cornish pasties0 -

That made me laugh now.In Germany there is the Stiftung Warentest. It is a german consumer organisation (and these days they also have a Magazine) and they regularly compare and test consumer products and food.
The stamp on the box just mentiones that these Lebkuchen have been tested by the Stiftung Warentest in 12/2004 and be found to be "sehr gut" (very good), which is the highest grade (1 = sehr gut) in the german Schulsystem. These tests usually are based on taste and quality of ingredients.

Lidl has some lovely stuff, but the thing that sometimes really drives me to go there is the 46% Madagascar Chocolate from Gross. That stuff is to die for.
It currently costs 69p for a 125 g bar, and puts the Black and Green Chocolate (which I also like, but is 165 for 100g) to shame.0
