  • Regardless of Toothsmith's comments (he is a dentist BTW so knows what substances destroy your teeth!), I do think that £400 a month, if he has no rent an CT to pay, is more than enough to be able to pay for the dentist, if you budget properly.

If he puts away £10 a week, he should soon have enough to pay even the maximum bill.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

I earn around £95 ish per week and get my scripts and dental for for free :) thankfully. :) its a HC2 form i think and lasts for one year .

I think the problem with your boyfriend not qualifying and i do although i am on a very similar wage (bar a few quid) is that he doesnt have any rent and council tax outgoings so he has spare money so to speak even though hes on a low income. After rent and c.tax i am left with the same amount the govt states for single folk to live off so thats why i qualify :)

"or worse....actually I wasnt going to mention it in my original post, but my boyfriend was attacked by three youths after he tried to stop one of them harrassing a young girl on a night out - he was celebrating passing his driving test.....since then he has suffered terribly with the teeth on the bottom right of his jaw (where he was kicked in the face) as two are now loose. I posted this telling him that there are some lovely people out there who are kind enough to help others......and then I read your reply!! What did my nan used to say?...."If you haven't got anything good to say, don't say anything at all".....

Has he applied for compensation from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Association? www.cica.gov.uk They have a calculator which you could check for eligibility.

Has he ad the initial checkup, maybe you hsould have that and then decide afterwards what can be done, go to an nhs dentist and ask them about how mnuch it will cost to treat your teeth.

(reminds me, I need to go as well)

a lot of cities have student dental places, they are usually free if it isn't very serious

"What exactly are his outgoings? £400 a month sound plenty to me for someone who sponges a roof over his head wherever he can.

And did he get any 'help' to buy all the stuff that got his teeth into such a state in just 3 years?"
not sure how helpful that answer was mwant to be Toothsmith! It kind of makes it sound like you assume his pain is self inflicted through sweets or worse...

people on here are only trying to help. maybe if you'd put more detail in your original post people wouldnt of made assumptions?

at the dentist i work at, you can pay by installments but full payment must have been made before the treatment is carried out. otherwise the practice is running a severe risk of not getting paid at all (everyone says they'll 'pop back' to pay and 95% dont) - this is especially true if there is lab work involved. not only will they have to pay themselves, the nurse, for surgery rental etc but also the lab bill.

has he got a nhs dentist? the max nhs charge is £198.00 - privately it could be anything.

Yeh, just do the checkup, it isn't much at all, at least then you will get a better idea of what the real damage is.. Your teeth are very important, don't delay!

he could always go to a+e and say he is in incredible pain- 2 things are likely to happen at worst some pain killers and at best a visit to an emergency dentist. also could he not increase his hours to maybe 20 a week or look at a second job. he could get private cover for £8pm see- https://www.hsa.co.uk/hsa/pages/buy/dentalquote.jsp?_requestid=117316.
without knowing his full circumstances i think it was a little cruel of people to judge and pick fault with his situation. I hope he gets well.

A&E is for ACCIDENT & EMERGENCIES. The clues in the name. If it does turn into a emergency, he needs to ring the emergency dentist, but he will still have to pay at least £16.20. A&E is a severe last resort. They are over run and under staffed as it is.
