I got into setanta with a free freeview box promotion and free setanta for 3 months (or something like that) in July 07. I couldn't get freeview working with my existing satellite so I called to cancel as soon as I could. At the time it was very difficult to get through to anyone. I remember being on hold one time for at least 10 minutes. I ended up being told I had to write to them so did. I cancelled my DD and never paid an extra penny.

After a few letters asking me to reinstate my DD or whatever, which I ignored, I didn't hear any more from them. I guess I am one of the "lucky ones".
  • Seems I've been luckier than all of you. I simply cancelled my direct debit online after the last live premiership game I wanted to watch at the end of last season and never bothered to write a letter or phone them to cancel. They scrambled my channels about a week later and I got a letter from them a few weeks later to say since my direct debit had been cancelled my subscription was outstanding suggesting I reinstate the direct debit or they might have to use bailiffs. I phoned them up to find out my outstanding debt and the person i spoke to told me I owed £0.00. Only thing I've got since then is begging letters to come back and a phonecall 2 days ago offering me their new 3 months half-price deal which had already expired. I politely declined.
  • I had massive problems trying to cancel sentana, they kept reconnecting me without my consent and then it was costing me loads of money on 0870 to cancel them.

I was given a date for 24th October when my service will be deactivated, the company is a joke and I would advise anyone thinking of subscribing to forget it as it is easier to get a divorce than cancelling your subscription.

I had Setanta by Broadband for a month for 7.99 (because there was something specific I wanted to watch), then cancelled it without a problem, then reactivated it for a month again about four months later, then cancelled again.
Hate to say this in the context of this thread, but it was simple, painless and worked.

You were very fortunate as most of the people on this forum have had a nightmare

if you've had a bad experience, it might be an idea to let others know by posting on review sites like reviewcentre, ciao.co.uk. often these rank on page 1 for the company name search, so anyone searching for setanta would see what you all thought of them.

I had a terrible time with Setanta and wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. Particularly annoying as they have exclusive coverage of some England soccer matches and in view of their appalling service I refuse to have anything to do with them which means I miss out. What were the authorities thinking of when they awarded this contract. Certainly not the football fan. Am not the biggest fan of the administrative side of Sky but even they border on reputable compared to these people.

I've been thinking about this. I don't have Setanta but it strikes me that this may be an UCTA issue and that Trading Standards might like to know about it. Also, if it's a rolling one month contract, I don't quite see why you'd need to give what is actually three month's notice.

  • I too have has problems with Setanta

Summer last year I bought a Setanta viewing card from Argos for £ 19.99 (which was supposedly the connection fee and first months viewing) as I already has an old On-Digital set top box.
I followed the instruction in the box and registered online and started watching the channel with no problem.

A month later, I recivied a new viewing card from Setanta which was to 'replace' my orginal card. Everything was ok, but after a day or two, I could no longer get the channel.

I called Setanta customer services and I was told that as I "On-Digital boxes were not compatable", and I would be sent a new Segem set-top box free of charge.

A few weeks past, and as the new box had not arrived, I telephoned again as was told that this offer ended in June "2007" and no box would be sent.

I was livid, and sent a written complaint. I did how ever purchase a new HDD box from Comet for £ 100.00.

In the mean time, I then noticed that Setanta's first direct debit payment was a whopping £ 40.00 from bank account. I called customer services as was told this was a mistake as I had purchased a £ 19.99 card, and I would be refunded.

As this did not happen, I called again, only to be told that I would not get a refund as I had "registered incorrectly on the website".

I again wrote a complaint demanding a refund, and followed it up with three more as I did not get a response (which included my new address as I moved house in January).

As the footy finished, I cancelled my subscibition and direct debit in writing.

As soon as I did this, I was bombarded by letter (to my old address) and by text message on my mobile telling me to contact Setanta urgently.

I recivied a call from them about four weeks ago, and gave them 'what for'.

I still have not seen my refund, but I am still recieving "Please come back" letters and flyers (again to my old address).

I am trying to extract myself from Setanta at the moment.
Moved house to a property where I couldn't have a satellite dish
Called Setanta to cancel back in Feb all seemed ok
Cancelled the direct debit 'Great' I thought that's that.

Nothing from them for 5 months then a call claiming I owe £50
    Service is still active !
It hasn't been cancelled. When I said that I cancelled in Feb I was told that they had no record and I was still liable !
I have sent numerous emails to which I have had no reply
Because its a PO Box number you can't sent anything registered.
Been told this morning that the account has now been cancelled BUT the money is still outstanding.

No one on the telephone customer services has the authority to cancel any outstanding amounts however they have been clocked up.

I have NEVER received anything in writing from Setanta which kind of smacks of double standards.

And after reading this if anyone is thinking of subscribing DON'T !
