Earlier references to 'greenpeople' sent me to study their products, and — guess what — "all shampoos free from sodium lauryl sulphate …" BUT their 'Itch Away Shampoo' contains AMMONIUM lauryl sulphate!!!!! As a former research scientist, I am NOT impressed at such chicanery. And it's £8.80 for a measly 125mls, too!

You may well be right that there is chicanery going on here, and I fully understand your point. As a scientist you might well think that ammonium lauryl sulphate was just as bad as sodium lauryl sulphate.

But in fact, surprising as it might seem, the counter ion does make a big difference to irritancy and ammonium lauryl sulphate is a lot less irritating than soidum lauryl sulphate. The irritancy of sodium lauryl sulphate can be vastly reduced by combining it with something like cocamidopropyl betaine which alters the micelle structure of the formulation.

The explanation is that the sodium form is easily incorported into the lamellar liquid crystal structure of the stratum corneum lipids. I had better not go into any more detail as there can't be too many scientists reading this, but have a look at the work of Peter Elias if you are interested.

I think avoiding sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate if you have sensitive skin makes sense. But the suggestion that either causes cancer is laughable.

H & Barratt stocks the Dr.Organic range, the shampoo is SLS/SLes free. Haven't tried it myself yet, I buy my SLS free shampoo base & conditioner from http://www.naturallythinking.com/brands/Cosmetic-Bases.html

Please check out Reviewcentre before ordering from this company as Naturally Thinking only get 3/5 stars. Unfortunately the negative reviews match with my experience, the recent spate of positive ones are solicited via Facebook!

I buy shampoos from these people. No parabens, no nasties and no SLS or similar. They smell great too.

I'm on a bit of a mission now, after reading this, and have just checked by 'Simple' brand shower gel, after water the second ingredient is SLaurethS! And this is the brand that is meant to natural, nothing harmful, just simple ingredients.

Having had a BKT, I now have to use both sodium and sulphate free hair products.

So far I have been happily using Organix Hair, which is available from Boots. I think it's £5 for 385ml, although was on offer a while ago for 2 for £7 which was a bargain - I'm hoping they'll do that again!

Also several products in the Tigi range which are sulphate free.

I've just dug out the reply I had from Tigi:

"No sodium in the Catwalk Range, S factor smoothing, Diamond dreams, and Colour shampoo.
    All products sulphate free."

At first glance I thought Tigi was really expensive. However I found that some places sell the shampoo and conditioner as a pair at a MUCH cheaper price. The prices I saw went up to £70 which was ridiculous, but I've just ordered a Tigi Diamond Dreams 750ml shampoo _ 750ml conditioner from ActiveBeauty for £17 plus cashback. So pretty happy with that - it's pretty much the same price as I'm paying for the Organix Hair stuff.
  • Body Shop is now on the bandwagon. I had SLs free shower gel for Mother's Day and have now bought shampoo and conditioner (£8 for both).

No return of scalp psoriasis, so all is looking good.
